{"id":56041,"date":"2013-08-09T12:00:13","date_gmt":"2013-08-09T17:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=56041"},"modified":"2013-08-02T03:47:37","modified_gmt":"2013-08-02T08:47:37","slug":"the-role-of-employer-selection-in-gendered-job-segregation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/08\/09\/the-role-of-employer-selection-in-gendered-job-segregation\/","title":{"rendered":"The Role of Employer Selection in Gendered Job Segregation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gender job segregation is the\u00a0practice of filling certain occupations with mostly male or mostly female workers. \u00a0Today 40% of\u00a0women work in jobs that are 3\/4ths female or more and 45% of men work in jobs that are more than 3\/4ths male (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iwpr.org\/roundtable-on-women-and-economy-files\/ariane-hegewisch-occupational-segregation-and-the-gender-wage-gap-in-the-usa\/view\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>). \u00a0Job segregation is the main cause of the wage gap between men and women because jobs that employ women pay somewhere between 5% and 19% less than ones that employ men (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/discover\/10.2307\/3598179?uid=2&amp;uid=4&amp;sid=21102419238831\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Job segregation decreased during the decades following the women&#8217;s movement, but progress towards integration <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/05\/02\/job-segregation-by-sex-1972-2008\/\">stalled out in the &#8217;90s<\/a> and hasn&#8217;t budged since. \u00a0There are lots of reasons why job segregation why gender persists; one of them is recruitment and selection. \u00a0That is, employers sometimes have preferences for whether a man or woman is suited for a job. \u00a0Usually these preferences match historical trends\/stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p>Philip Cohen offered an example of this over at <a href=\"http:\/\/m.theatlantic.com\/sexes\/archive\/2013\/03\/the-problem-with-mostly-male-and-mostly-female-workplaces\/274208\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Atlantic<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s a photograph of a recruitment banner for a window replacement company that he came across in the University of Maryland Student Union. \u00a0The banner features men as representatives of employees who do sales and installation, but a female in the role of customer support.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/07\/11.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-56042\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/07\/11.jpg\" width=\"257\" height=\"550\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cohen also observed the behavior of the white male job recruiters accompanying the banner. \u00a0\u00a0He writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 20 minutes, as dozens of people walked by, the recruiters approached 18 men and 0 women, asking them, &#8220;You guys looking for a job?&#8221; (or, in the case of a black man, &#8220;Hey man, you looking for a job?&#8221;).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is one way that jobs remain segregated by gender.
