{"id":55992,"date":"2013-07-31T12:00:36","date_gmt":"2013-07-31T17:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=55992"},"modified":"2013-07-30T18:42:24","modified_gmt":"2013-07-30T23:42:24","slug":"this-month-in-sociological-images-july-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/07\/31\/this-month-in-sociological-images-july-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"This Month in Sociological Images (July 2013)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>SocImages News:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We celebrated our 6th birthday this month. \u00a0As a present, we were gifted a <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/\" target=\"_blank\">launch page<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re super grateful to Jon Smadja for building it and enabling us to highlight all of the cool things going on at SocImages: not just <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">new posts every day<\/a>, but an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SocImages\" target=\"_blank\">active Twitter feed<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/socimages\" target=\"_blank\">far-reaching Facebook page<\/a>, and an <a href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\/socimages\/\" target=\"_blank\">interesting, funny, and sometimes disturbing Pinterest presence<\/a> (yes, we&#8217;ve been flagged for inappropriateness). \u00a0Meanwhile, the slideshow helps us keep \u00a0some of our favorite older posts at the forefront of the site. \u00a0We love it!<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who want to read the site the old way: just click on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">blog<\/a>&#8221; on the upper left under our logo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Big Posts this Month:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>We are eager to try and make public discourse more sociological, so we were really pleased when three of our posts this month made a significant impact:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our post in the aftermath of the Zimmerman verdict, showing that <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/07\/13\/stand-your-ground-laws-increases-racial-bias-in-justifiable-homicide-trials\/\" target=\"_blank\">stand your ground laws exacerbate already racially biased court outcomes<\/a>, received over 20,000 Facebook &#8220;likes&#8221; and was shared over 500 times.<\/li>\n<li>Our post about the divergent news coverage of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/07\/22\/media-kids-racial-stereotypes_n_3624740.html\" target=\"_blank\">two young boys who went for a joyride in their families&#8217; cars, one white and one black<\/a>, was re-posted at Huffington Post, where it received almost 30,000 &#8220;likes&#8221; and inspired almost 5,000 comments.<\/li>\n<li>And a SocImages Slate exclusive looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/double_x\/doublex\/2013\/07\/hookup_culture_for_the_white_wealthy_and_beautiful.html\" target=\"_blank\">hook up culture as a raced and classed phenomenon<\/a> was picked up at <a href=\"http:\/\/ideas.time.com\/2013\/07\/23\/what-everyones-getting-wrong-about-the-college-hook-up-culture\/?hpt=hp_t3\">TIME<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebony.com\/black-listed\/love-sex\/black-college-kids-less-likely-to-hook-up-981#axzz2ZusvtpSM\" target=\"_blank\">Ebony<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlanticwire.com\/entertainment\/2013\/07\/hooking-college-apparently-only-white-rich-and-drunk-tk\/67387\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Atlantic<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/hookup-culture-is-a-thing-rich-white-kids-do-867044582\" target=\"_blank\">Jezebel<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cross-post highlights&#8230;
