He was a German named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airships.net\/blog\/worlds-first-flight-attendant\" target=\"_blank\">Heinrich Kubis<\/a> and he was a steward on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airships.net\/delag-passenger-zeppelins#LZ-10\" target=\"_blank\">LZ-10 Schwaben zeppelin<\/a>, a rigid blimp like aircraft that began ferrying passengers in 1912. \u00a0Here&#8217;s Kubis at work:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/06\/13.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-55887\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/06\/13.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/06\/13.jpg 550w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/06\/13-500x297.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first flight attendant to serve on an airplane was a 14-year-old boy named <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.ladyskywriter.com\/2010\/07\/worlds-first-flight-attendant-on.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Sanderson<\/a>. It was 1922 and he was hired by The Daimler Airway (later part of British Airways):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/06\/14.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-55915\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/06\/14.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When commercial airlines took to the sky in the U.S., it was with an all-male staff. \u00a0A\u00a019-year-old Cuban American named Amaury Sanchez was the steward for Pan American&#8217;s inaugural flight in 1928.\u00a0 Pan Am maintained an all-male steward workforce for 16 years.<\/p>\n<p>Unnamed steward, 1920s (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/in_pictures\/8206079.stm\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/06\/22.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-55916\" alt=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/06\/22.jpg\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/06\/22.jpg 766w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/06\/22-500x333.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like Kubis&#8217; suit and bow tie, Sanderson&#8217;s military-style jacket, and our anonymous steward&#8217;s white coat reveal, the steward role was taken very seriously: they played an important role in an elite world. \u00a0This would change with the democratization of air travel and the introduction of the female flight attendant during World War II. \u00a0By the &#8217;50s, many airlines would only hire women and the occupation would become increasingly feminized and trivialized, just like the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/12\/28\/the-manly-origins-of-cheerleading\/\">once all-male activity of cheerleading<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
