The symbol, designed by a team at\u00a0Gordon College, looks like <a href=\"http:\/\/hamilton-wenham.patch.com\/articles\/active-handicapped-sign-created-in-wenham-will-be-used-in-the-big-apple\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/121.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-55597\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/121.jpg\" width=\"271\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve posted previously about the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/10\/19\/disability-symbology\/\">politics of the symbol<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/02\/19\/disability-rights-and-the-symbol-of-accessibility\/\">history<\/a>. The notable changes here are the moving of the arms to the wheels of the chair, suggesting that the person is pushing themselves, and the forward-leaning angle, suggesting active motion. \u00a0It tells a story about\u00a0independence and ability, instead of dependence and disability. \u00a0A very nice change.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
