{"id":55504,"date":"2013-05-19T12:00:19","date_gmt":"2013-05-19T17:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=55504"},"modified":"2013-06-02T00:31:54","modified_gmt":"2013-06-02T05:31:54","slug":"does-abortion-cause-infanticide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/05\/19\/does-abortion-cause-infanticide\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Abortion Cause Infanticide?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/montclairsoci.blogspot.com\/2013\/05\/abortion-and-infanticide.html\" target=\"_blank\">Montclair SocioBlog<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Does \u201cthe abortion culture\u201d cause infanticide? \u00a0That is, does legalizing the aborting of a fetus in the womb create a cultural, moral climate where people feel free to kill newborn babies?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a new argument.\u00a0 I recall a 1998\u00a0Peggy Noonan op-ed in the <em>Times<\/em>,\u00a0\u201cAbortion\u2019s Children,\u201d arguing that kids who grew up in the abortion culture are \u201cconfused and morally dulled.\u201d* \u00a0Earlier this week, <em>USA Today<\/em> ran an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2013\/05\/14\/gosnell-abortion-murder-infanticide-column\/2158421\/\">op-ed\u00a0<\/a>by Mark Rienzi repeating this argument in connection with the Gosnell murder conviction.<\/p>\n<p>Rienzi argues that the problem is not one depraved doctor.\u00a0 As the subhead says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The killers are not who you think. They\u2019re moms.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Worse, he warns, infanticide has skyrocketed.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While murder rates for almost every group in society have plummeted in recent decades, there&#8217;s one group where murder rates have doubled, according to CDC and National Center for Health Statistics data \u2014 babies less than a year old.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Really? The FBI\u2019s Uniform Crime Reports has a different picture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/120.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-55505\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/120.jpg\" width=\"413\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/120.jpg 590w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/120-500x323.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many of these victims were not newborns, and Rienzi is talking about day-of-birth homicides &#8212; the type killing Dr. Gosnell was convicted of, a substitute for abortion.\u00a0 Most of these, as Rienzi says are committed not by doctors but by mothers.\u00a0 I make the assumption that the method in most of these cases is smothering.\u00a0 These deaths show an even steeper decline since 1998.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/27.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-55506\" alt=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/27.jpg\" width=\"423\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/27.jpg 529w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/27-500x294.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Where did Rienzi get his data that rates had doubled?\u00a0 By going back to 1950.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/32.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-55507\" alt=\"3\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/32.jpg\" width=\"433\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The data on infanticide fit with his idea that legalizing abortion increased rates of infanticide.\u00a0 The rate rises after\u00a0<i>Roe v. Wade<\/i>\u00a0(1973) and continues upward till 2000.<\/p>\n<p>But that hardly settles the issue. Yes, as Rienzi says, \u201cThe law can be a potent moral teacher.\u201d\u00a0 But many other factors could have been affecting the increase in infanticide, factors much closer to actual event &#8212; the mother\u2019s age, education, economic and family circumstances, blood lead levels, etc.<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0<i>Roe<\/i>\u00a0changed the culture, then that change should be reflected not just in the very small number of infanticides but in attitudes in the general population.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the GSS did not ask about abortion till 1977, but since that year, attitudes on abortion have changed very little.\u00a0\u00a0 Nor does this measure of \u201cabortion culture\u201d have any relation to rates of infanticide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/41.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-55508\" alt=\"4\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/41.jpg\" width=\"423\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/41.jpg 522w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/41-500x310.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moreover, if there is a relation between infanticide and general attitudes about abortion, then we would expect to see higher rates of infanticide in areas where attitudes on abortion are more tolerant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/5.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-55509\" alt=\"5\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/5.jpg\" width=\"441\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/5.jpg 544w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/5-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The South and Midwest are most strongly anti-abortion, the West Coast and Northeast the most liberal. \u00a0So, do these cultural difference affect rates of infanticide?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/125.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-55685\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/125.jpg\" width=\"442\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/125.jpg 546w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/125-500x339.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, yes, but it turns out the actual rates of infanticide are precisely <em>the opposite<\/em> of what the cultural explanation would predict.\u00a0 The data instead support a different explanation of infanticide: Some state laws make it harder for a woman to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.\u00a0 Under those conditions, more women will resort to infanticide.\u00a0 By contrast, where abortion is safe, legal, and available, women will terminate unwanted pregnancies well before parturition.<\/p>\n<p>The absolutist pro-lifers will dismiss the data by insisting that there is really no difference between abortion and infanticide and that infanticide is just a very late-term abortion. As Rienzi puts it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As a society, we could agree that there really is little difference between killing a being inside and outside the womb.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In fact, very few Americans agree with this proposition. Instead, they do distinguish between a cluster of a few fertilized cells and a newborn baby. I know of no polls that ask about infanticide, but I would guess that a large majority would say that it is wrong under all circumstances.\u00a0 But only perhaps 20% of the population thinks that abortion is wrong under all circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the acceptance of abortion in a society makes people \u201cconfused and morally dulled\u201d depends on how you define and measure those concepts.\u00a0 But the data do strongly suggest that whatever \u201cthe abortion culture\u201d might be, it lowers the rate of infanticide rather than increasing it.<\/p>\n<p>* I had trouble finding Noonan\u2019s op-ed at the Times Website.\u00a0 Fortunately, then-Rep.
