{"id":55384,"date":"2013-05-29T12:00:18","date_gmt":"2013-05-29T17:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=55384"},"modified":"2013-09-13T13:31:42","modified_gmt":"2013-09-13T18:31:42","slug":"americans-underestimate-how-many-other-americans-support-same-sex-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/05\/29\/americans-underestimate-how-many-other-americans-support-same-sex-marriage\/","title":{"rendered":"Americans Underestimate How Many Other Americans Support Same Sex Marriage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s an interesting new wrinkle in the data on support for same sex marriage. \u00a0According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/162398\/sex-marriage-support-solidifies-above.aspx?utm_source=alert&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=syndication&amp;utm_content=morelink&amp;utm_term=Americas%20-%20Moral%20Issues\" target=\"_blank\">Gallup<\/a>, 53% of Americans now favor such marriages, but we don&#8217;t necessarily think <em>other people<\/em> do. \u00a0Overall, Americans, on average, think that 63% of their fellow citizens oppose same sex marriage; in fact, 45% do. \u00a0That&#8217;s an over-estimate of 18 percentage points!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/22.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-55387\" alt=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/22.png\" width=\"473\" height=\"458\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Americans of all stripes &#8212; Democrat and Republican, liberal and conservative, old and young &#8212; underestimate support for same sex marriage. \u00a0Liberals come the closest, thinking that 48% approve; conservatives are the farthest off, thinking that only 16% do.<\/p>\n<p>This data resonates with the recent finding that <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/03\/27\/politicians-overestimate-their-constituents-conservatism\/\" target=\"_blank\">both Democratic and Republican politicians underestimate their constituents&#8217; progressiveness<\/a>. \u00a0I suspect that these misconceptions may make politicians wary about pressing for progressive policies; I wonder how similar misconceptions among the voting public might shape the pace and trajectory of social change.<\/p>\n<p><em>h\/t <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tylerkingkade\" target=\"_blank\">@tylerkingkade<\/a>.
