So the magician offers another.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"420\" height=\"315\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/nBG140hMCu8?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;start=143\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>From 59th St. to 125th St. is one stop on the express.\u00a0 But as the movie shows, that short ride covers a large demographic change, and it\u2019s not just racial.\u00a0 The New Yorker has posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/sandbox\/business\/subway.html\">interactive graphics<\/a>\u00a0showing the median income of the census tracts surrounding subway stations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/116.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-55326\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/116.jpg\" width=\"460\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/116.jpg 821w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/116-500x319.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Take the A train one stop &#8212; from the southern border of Central Park to a few blocks above its northern border &#8212; and see median income drop by $100,000.<\/p>\n<p>Many other lines travel the extremes of economic inequality.\u00a0 My line is the 2:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/24.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/24.jpg\" width=\"578\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the early morning commute, I see blue collar workers in their hoodies or rough jackets and steel-toe boots next to well-dressed people reading <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t get on at the same stop.\u00a0 The people who live in and work in the Wall Street census tract, which includes Park Place, are not on the train.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what their housing looks like:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"BATTERY PARK CITY: as a pioneer. It's all Green, environmentally friendly.\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/3.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here is Franklin St., Brooklyn:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"4\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/05\/4.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The subway demographic trick is not limited to New York. Here\u2019s a time-lapse video of the Red Line of Chicago\u2019s CTA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/44945735?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0&amp;color=b30000\" height=\"300\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Despite the social class segregation in housing, in cities like New York and Chicago, people of vastly different economic circumstances are likely to share the same subway car, at least for a few stops. \u00a0Yet I don\u2019t get a sense of strong resentment or even envy among the have-nots (though I wish I had systematic data on this). \u00a0This is similar to the findings of Rachel Sherman, who studied <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/04\/16\/when-classes-collide-workers-and-guests-at-high-end-hotels\/\">how workers at high-end hotels thought of their guests<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>New York and Chicago, however, are also where the rich are more likely to be liberal and in favor of redistributionist policies.\u00a0 As <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/Red_State_Blue_State_Rich_State_Poor_Sta.html?id=jbingNQfdLgC\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Gelman<\/a> has shown, the wealthy in rich states are far more liberal than the wealthy in poor states.\u00a0 That may be partly because in rich states, the wealthy live in the large cities.\u00a0 It would be interesting to see if we saw the same effect if we looked at Upstate New York, Downstate Illinois, or Massachusetts outside Rte. 128.<\/p>\n<p>HT: Jenn Lena for the link.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"> Jay Livingston is the chair of the Sociology Department at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/profilepages\/view_profile.php?username=livingstonj\">Montclair State University<\/a>.
