{"id":54782,"date":"2013-04-21T12:00:49","date_gmt":"2013-04-21T17:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=54782"},"modified":"2013-04-17T01:10:42","modified_gmt":"2013-04-17T06:10:42","slug":"a-history-of-american-energy-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/04\/21\/a-history-of-american-energy-use\/","title":{"rendered":"A History of American Energy Use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Planet Money&#8217;s Jacob Goldstein and Lam Thuy Vo offered some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/money\/2013\/04\/10\/176801719\/two-centuries-of-energy-in-america-in-four-graphs?ft=1&amp;f=151202820\" target=\"_blank\">interesting data<\/a> last week about the history of energy consumption in the U.S. \u00a0First they offered data on the rise and fall of alternative energy sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/115.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-54783\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/115.jpg\" width=\"504\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/115.jpg 630w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/115-500x442.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Coal, the first to replace wood, became a common energy source largely thanks to the railroads. \u00a0Wood was more or less everywhere, but coal had to be transported.<\/p>\n<p>The invention and spread of the internal combustion engine drove the demand for oil. \u00a0According to <a href=\"http:\/\/alternativeenergy.procon.org\/view.resource.php?resourceID=002475\" target=\"_blank\">this site<\/a>\u00a0(PM doesn&#8217;t say), natural gas becomes common in the &#8217;50s thanks to the improvement of techniques for making metals and welding. This facilitates the building of oil pipelines, hence the rise of oil.<\/p>\n<p>The overall rise in energy consumption per capita is worrisome, but it has fallen off since the mid-70s. \u00a0Thanks to high prices that encourage lower use and greater efficiency of appliances, our appetite for energy seems to have leveled off.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/27.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-54784\" alt=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/27.jpg\" width=\"483\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not to end on an optimistic note, though. \u00a0That data is per capita. \u00a0Because our population has been rising, our overall energy use has continued to go up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/33.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-54785\" alt=\"3\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/33.jpg\" width=\"470\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/33.jpg 588w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/33-500x378.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
