In fact, such images are taken by actual human photojournalists whose rights of access are protected by the First Amendment establishing the freedom of the press.<\/p>\n<p>This is a real thorn in the side of both corporations and governments that might prefer to control media&#8217;s access to\u00a0embarrassing\u00a0or illegal activities. \u00a0So, often they try to strong arm journalists, co-opt local officials, or pass (likely illegal) legislation designed to protect them from the free press&#8217; gaze. \u00a0Here are two current examples.<\/p>\n<p>First, <em>Mother Jones<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/blue-marble\/2013\/04\/reporters-say-exxon-impeding-spill-coverage-arkansas\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that Exxon officials are making efforts to limit reporter access to the oil pipeline leak in Mayflower, Arkansas. \u00a0This is happening in at least two ways. \u00a0First, Exxon representatives and local law enforcement are blocking journalists from accessing the spill site, threatening\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;arrest for criminal trespass.&#8221; \u00a0Second, <a href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/2013\/04\/07\/exxonmobil-faa-arkansas-cops.html\" target=\"_blank\">BoingBoing<\/a> reports that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has instituted a temporary &#8220;no-fly zone&#8221; in the area of the spill. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a screenshot from the FAA&#8217;s website:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/111.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-54725\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/111.jpg\" width=\"561\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/111.jpg 1039w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/111-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/04\/111-1024x684.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Second, in the last two years Americans have shuddered in response to the release of undercover video revealing the abuse of animals on<a href=\"http:\/\/www.humanesociety.org\/news\/blog\/2012\/05\/wyoming_pig_investigation_blog.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0industrial<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/WNT\/video\/mcdonalds-drops-large-mcmuffin-egg-supplier-14986800\" target=\"_blank\">farms<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/05\/29\/incentives-for-cruelty-abuse-of-tennessee-walking-horses\/\">torture of Tennessee Walking horses<\/a>. \u00a0These have resulted in convictions, but they&#8217;ve also raised the hackles of the agricultural industry. \u00a0The\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/04\/07\/us\/taping-of-farm-cruelty-is-becoming-the-crime.html?smid=fb-share\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that, in an effort to limit their risk, they&#8217;ve sponsored bills (proposed or enacted in about a dozen state legislatures) making it illegal to videotape animals on their property without their permission and requiring all prospective employees to reveal associations with animal rights groups.<\/p>\n<p>These examples remind us how important it is that journalists have the freedom to do their job. \u00a0They also remind us that we must vigilantly protect that freedom. \u00a0Corporations, and governments too, have an incentive to limit the freedom of the press. \u00a0These are powerful entities, often in cahoots, that can and will ignore the First Amendment when they can get away with it.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
