Already at the fringes of &#8220;respectable society,&#8221; by choice or circumstance, these women often have less to lose than others.<\/p>\n<p>The Mardi Gras Baby Dolls are an excellent example. \u00a0NPR&#8217;s Tina Antolini <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2013\/02\/16\/172165237\/the-baby-dolls-of-mardi-gras-a-fun-tradition-with-a-serious-side\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writes<\/a> that the baby doll tradition began in 1912. \u00a0That year a group of African American sex workers dressed up like baby dolls and took to the streets to celebrate Mardi Gras.<\/p>\n<p>Baby dolls, 1930s (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/02\/08\/living\/iyw-baby-doll-ladies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/03\/51.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-61834\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/03\/51.jpg\" alt=\"5\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Baby dolls, 1942:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/13.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-54031\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/13.jpg\" alt=\"babydolls1\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Calling your lover &#8220;baby&#8221; had just become part of the English language. \u00a0Meanwhile, actual baby dolls, the toy, were rare. \u00a0By dressing up this way, they flouted both gender and race rules. \u00a0Women were largely excluded from masking for Mardi Gras and African Americans were still living under Jim Crow. \u00a0Black women, by virtue of being both Black and female, were particularly devalued, sex workers ever more so. \u00a0Asserting themselves as baby dolls, then, was a way of arguing that they were <em>worth something<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[I]t had all that double meaning in it,&#8221; explains historian\u00a0Kim Vaz, &#8220;because African-American women weren&#8217;t considered precious and doll-like.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was a bold thing to do and the Baby Dolls carried walking sticks with them to beat off those who accosted them.<\/p>\n<p>Today, honoring those brave women that came before, the tradition lives on in a city with the richest and most creative and unique traditions I have ever encountered. \u00a0Happy Mardi Gras, Baby Dolls!
