{"id":54024,"date":"2013-02-27T12:00:38","date_gmt":"2013-02-27T17:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=54024"},"modified":"2014-11-19T19:13:25","modified_gmt":"2014-11-20T00:13:25","slug":"men-walk-women-pose-the-gender-politics-of-silhouettes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/02\/27\/men-walk-women-pose-the-gender-politics-of-silhouettes\/","title":{"rendered":"The Gender Politics of Posing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A reader named Caroline sent in a really nice email. \u00a0&#8220;I just wanted to tell you &#8211; again,&#8221; she wrote, &#8220;how much of an impression you&#8217;ve made on my 17yo daughter Eliza.&#8221; \u00a0She explains that they&#8217;d been reading SocImages together for &#8220;years (yes, years!).&#8221; \u00a0We can&#8217;t express how much that means to us!<\/p>\n<p>Caroline was inspired to write because Eliza had brought to her attention this image accompanying <a href=\"http:\/\/nakedsecurity.sophos.com\/2012\/11\/26\/us-school-tries-to-suspend-student-for-refusing-to-wear-rfid-tracking-badge\/\" target=\"_blank\">a story<\/a> about a high school&#8217;s trackable ID badges:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/12.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-54025\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/12.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"398\" height=\"314\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eliza had noted that, while the male figure was walking more-or-less directly towards the viewer, the female figure was standing with her torso contorted and her hip cocked.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, @low_hana sent us this <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/low_hana\/status\/533645981460357120\" target=\"_blank\">screenshot<\/a> of DC Comics Underoos available for sale. Men are posed like, well, superheroes, but the women twist, fiddle, and turn their backs:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/1-3.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-65076\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/1-3-500x499.png\" alt=\"1 (3)\" width=\"500\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/1-3-500x499.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/1-3-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/1-3.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, this might seem like a small thing, and unimpressive in the singular. \u00a0But, in fact, we see this kind of thing all the time, even in ostensibly objective <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/03\/14\/gender-and-anatomy\/\" target=\"_blank\">medical textbooks and anatomy illustrations<\/a>. \u00a0We even see it when only faces are involved, as in this series of movie posters featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/05\/24\/gendered-positioning-in-promotional-posters\/\" target=\"_blank\">men looking straight at the camera and women looking askance<\/a>. \u00a0Here&#8217;s one example:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/2.jpeg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-54026\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/2.jpeg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"435\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/2.jpeg 725w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/2-500x177.jpeg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As these types of images add up in our subconscious, they tell us a story about masculinity and femininity. \u00a0It&#8217;s a complicated one, but might include lessons like this: men face things head on, while women are uncertain; women pose and men take action; \u00a0men are straightforward, women sly.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks Caroline, for sending in another example of such an insidious and largely invisible cultural pattern. \u00a0And great job, Eliza, for spotting it!<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
