{"id":539,"date":"2014-05-16T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-16T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/20\/white-as-beautiful-black-as-white\/"},"modified":"2015-09-01T21:16:34","modified_gmt":"2015-09-02T02:16:34","slug":"white-as-beautiful-black-as-white","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2014\/05\/16\/white-as-beautiful-black-as-white\/","title":{"rendered":"When Whiteness is the Standard of Beauty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Flashback Friday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One manifestation of white supremacy is the use of whiteness as the standard of beauty. \u00a0When whiteness is considered superior, white people are considered more attractive by definition and,\u00a0insofar as the appearance of\u00a0people of other races deviates from that standard, they are considered ugly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Non-white people are still allowed to be considered beautiful, of course, as long as they look like white people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This collection of images is a nice illustration of the way in which black women, in particular, are expected to look white in order to qualify as beautiful. The images are powerful because the black models look almost identical to the white models, but also because they are ads for make-up. Or, am I being unfair?
