{"id":53748,"date":"2013-02-08T12:00:55","date_gmt":"2013-02-08T17:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=53748"},"modified":"2013-02-07T03:47:09","modified_gmt":"2013-02-07T08:47:09","slug":"policing-powerful-women-hillary-clinton-and-the-ny-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/02\/08\/policing-powerful-women-hillary-clinton-and-the-ny-post\/","title":{"rendered":"Policing Powerful Women: Hillary Clinton and the NY Post"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last month the <em>New York Post<\/em> ran with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/online\/new-york-post-totally-uncontroversial-cover-hillary-explodes-with-rage-no-wonder-bills-afraid\/\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a> unflattering cover photo of\u00a0Hillary Clinton responding strongly to congressional questioning and\u00a0the tagline &#8220;No Wonder Bill&#8217;s Afraid.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/NY_NYP-e1359039188880.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-53751\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/NY_NYP-e1359039188880-500x540.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/NY_NYP-e1359039188880-500x540.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/NY_NYP-e1359039188880.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The not-so-subtle sexist messages\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Even if you&#8217;re secretary of state in the most powerful\u00a0country in the world, it&#8217;s not alright to get angry if you&#8217;re a woman;<\/li>\n<li>when a powerful woman raises her voice to make a point, she is out of\u00a0control &#8212; &#8220;exploding with rage&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>and when a man is married to a\u00a0powerful woman, even a man who used to lead the free world, he is\u00a0automatically cowed by her.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite rapid gains in women&#8217;s political and corporate leadership\u00a0since the 1970s, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kean.edu\/~jkeil\/Welcome_files\/Have%20You%20Come%20a%20Long%20Way%3F.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">powerful women<\/a> are still held to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegrindstone.com\/2011\/10\/24\/mentors\/famous-business-women-role-models\/10-of-the-most-annoying-stereotypes-about-women-in-power-337\/\" target=\"_blank\">damaging\u00a0double-bind<\/a> of appearing &#8220;properly&#8221; masculine in order to appear<br \/>\nleaderly and &#8220;properly&#8221; feminine so as to not violate social\u00a0expectations.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\">Caroline Heldman is a professor of politics at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxy.edu\/faculty\/caroline-heldman\">Occidental College<\/a>.
