{"id":53669,"date":"2013-02-05T11:30:44","date_gmt":"2013-02-05T16:30:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=53669"},"modified":"2013-02-03T20:00:30","modified_gmt":"2013-02-04T01:00:30","slug":"the-rise-and-fall-of-hilary-and-hillary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/02\/05\/the-rise-and-fall-of-hilary-and-hillary\/","title":{"rendered":"The Rise and Fall of &#8220;Hilary&#8221; and Hillary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/montclairsoci.blogspot.com\/2013\/02\/bye-bye-hilary.html\" target=\"_blank\">Montclair SocioBlog<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m generally skeptical about claims that names in the media have a big impact on parents\u2019 choices of what to name the baby (see this earlier\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/montclairsoci.blogspot.com\/2012\/05\/twilight-timing.html\">post<\/a>\u00a0on \u201cTwilight\u201d names).\u00a0 But Hilary Parker<a href=\"http:\/\/hilaryparker.com\/2013\/01\/30\/hilary-the-most-poisoned-baby-name-in-us-history\/\" target=\"_blank\"> points out<\/a> some examples where celebrity influence is unmistakable.\u00a0 Like Farrah.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/Farrah.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53696\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/Farrah-500x229.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/Farrah-500x229.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/Farrah.jpg 737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharlie\u2019s Angels\u201d came to TV in 1976, and the angel<em>\u00a0prima inter pares<\/em>\u00a0was Farrah Fawcett.\u00a0 This poster was seemingly everywhere (and in 1976, that barely noticeable nipple was a big deal):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/farrah-fawcett.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-53697\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/farrah-fawcett-500x747.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/farrah-fawcett-500x747.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/farrah-fawcett.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But as with most names that rise quickly, Farrah went quickly out of style.\u00a0 If you see a Farrah on a dating site listing her age as 29, she\u2019s lying by six or seven years.<\/p>\n<p>Hilary is different.\u00a0 The name grew gradually in popularity, probably flowing down through the social class system.\u00a0 There was no sudden burst of popularity caused by the outside force of a celebrity name (see Gabriel Rossman\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2012\/05\/how-things-get-popular\/257080\/\">post<\/a>\u00a0on endogenous and exogenous influences). \u00a0Then in 1992, Hilary seemed to have been totally banned from the obstetrics ward.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/Hilary.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53698\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/Hilary-500x227.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/Hilary-500x227.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/Hilary.jpg 734w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Surely, the effect came not from word of mouth but from a prominent Hilary (or in this case, the rarer spelling Hillary), the one who said she wasn&#8217;t going to stay home and bake cookies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/Hillary.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53699\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/02\/Hillary.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maybe now that Hillary is getting a favorable press &#8212; good reviews for her stint as Secretary of State &#8212; the name might return to its 1980s popularity.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"> Jay Livingston is the chair of the Sociology Department at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/profilepages\/view_profile.php?username=livingstonj\">Montclair State University<\/a>.
