{"id":53519,"date":"2013-01-26T12:00:56","date_gmt":"2013-01-26T17:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=53519"},"modified":"2013-02-04T10:04:30","modified_gmt":"2013-02-04T15:04:30","slug":"fox-news-says-feminists-want-to-have-sex-with-underage-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/01\/26\/fox-news-says-feminists-want-to-have-sex-with-underage-men\/","title":{"rendered":"Fox News Says Feminists Want to Have Sex with Underage Men"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.policymic.com\/articles\/24303\/fox-news-falsely-claims-feminists-want-to-have-sex-with-underage-men\/358572\" target=\"_blank\">PolicyMic<\/a>.<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/Screenshot_4.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53521\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/Screenshot_4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"479\" height=\"103\" \/><\/a>At the end of my sociology of gender class, I suggest that the fact that feminists are associated with negative stereotypes &#8212; ugly, bitter, man-haters, for example &#8212; is not a reflection of who feminists really are, but a sign that the anti-feminists have power over how we think about the movement. \u00a0The very idea of a feminist, in other words, is politicized&#8230; and the opposition might be winning.<\/p>\n<p>A clip forwarded by Dmitriy T.C. is a great example. \u00a0In the 1.38 minute <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/video\/2013\/01\/22\/foxs-tantaros-suggests-feminism-encouraged-teac\/192351\" target=\"_blank\">Fox News clip<\/a> below, two pundits discuss a North Carolina teacher, Leah Gayle, who was accused of having sex with her 15-year-old student. \u00a0One of the show&#8217;s hosts suggests that feminism is to blame for Gayle&#8217;s actions. She says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There&#8217;s something about feminism that lets them know, I can do everything a man does. I can even go after that young boy. I deserve it&#8230; It&#8217;s turning women into sexualized freaks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/embed\/192351\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This clip reveals a discursive act. \u00a0She is defining who feminists are and what they believe. \u00a0And this idea is being broadcast across the airwaves.<\/p>\n<p>This happens all day every day. \u00a0Some of the messages are friendly to feminists, and some are not. \u00a0These messages compete in our collective imagination. \u00a0Most have little to do with what feminists (who are a diverse group anyway) actually believe and many are outrageous lies and distortions, like this one.<\/p>\n<p>So, next time you hear someone describing a feminist, know that what you&#8217;re hearing is almost never a strict definition of the movement. Instead, it&#8217;s a battle cry, with one side competing with the other to shape what we think of people who care about women&#8217;s equality with men.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
