Indeed, among people 55 and under, we rank dead last. \u00a0Among those 50-80 years old, our life expectancy is 3rd or 2nd to last.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/0110-health-SCORECARD-popup.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53480\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/0110-health-SCORECARD-popup.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"464\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sabrina Tavernise at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/10\/health\/americans-under-50-fare-poorly-on-health-measures-new-report-says.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;smid=tw-nytimes&amp;_r=3&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a> reports that the &#8220;major contributors&#8221; to low life expectancy among younger Americans are high rates of death from guns, car accidents, and drug overdoses. \u00a0We also have the highest rate of diabetes and the second-highest death rate from lung and heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>Americans had &#8220;the lowest probability over all of surviving to the age of 50.&#8221; \u00a0The numbers for American men were slightly worse than those for women. Overall, life expectancy for men was 17 out of 17; women came in 16th. \u00a0Education and poverty made a difference too, as did the more generous social services provided by the other countries in the study.<\/p>\n<p>What isn&#8217;t making a difference? \u00a0Apparently our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/10\/the-relationship-between-health-spending-and-life-expectancy\/\">incredible rate<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/05\/01\/the-u-s-1-in-health-costs\/\">health care spending<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/citings\/2013\/01\/11\/bad-news-for-americans-under-50\/\" target=\"_blank\">Citings and Sightings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
