We can expect nothing more from the Daily Mail. \u00a0And yet I can&#8217;t help but point out this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sport\/tennis\/article-2263813\/Roger-Federer-looks-pretty-pink-Australian-Open-plays-Nikolay-Davydenko.html\" target=\"_blank\">scintillating article<\/a> on what tennis player Roger Federer wore at the Australian Open. \u00a0An article on what a <em>man<\/em> was wearing, you might ask? \u00a0Indeed. \u00a0What might prompt such an abnormality? \u00a0Well, you see, Federer was wearing just the slightest bit of pink.<\/p>\n<p>This daring choice earned Federer 374 words in the Mail Online and six photographs highlighting his apparently newsworthy fashion choice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/11.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53393\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/11-500x352.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/11-500x352.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/11.png 647w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53394\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/2-500x367.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/2-500x367.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/2.png 646w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/3.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53395\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/3-500x360.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/3-500x360.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/3.png 645w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/4.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53396\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/4-500x295.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/4-500x295.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/01\/4.png 644w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now this isn&#8217;t a big deal, but it is a particularly striking example of the little ways in which rules around gender are enforced. \u00a0Federer took a risk by wearing even a little bit of pink; the Daily Mail goes to great lengths to point this out. \u00a0He also gets away with it, in the sense that the article doesn&#8217;t castigate or attempt to humiliate him for doing so.<\/p>\n<p>Federer, however, is near the top of a hierarchy of men. Research shows that men who otherwise embody high-status characteristics &#8212; which includes being light-skinned, ostensibly straight, attractive, athletic, and wealthy &#8212; can break gender rules with fewer consequences (see also, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/17\/boys-wear-pink\/\">the fashion choices of Andre 3000 and Kanye<\/a>). \u00a0A less high-status man might read this article and take note: Federer can get away with this, kinda, but I should steer clear&#8230;. and they&#8217;re probably right.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Todd Schoepflin <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CreateSociology\" target=\"_blank\">@CreateSociology<\/a> for the tip!<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
