{"id":53322,"date":"2013-01-10T13:01:05","date_gmt":"2013-01-10T18:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=53322"},"modified":"2012-12-31T03:02:15","modified_gmt":"2012-12-31T08:02:15","slug":"american-children-will-be-majority-minority-by-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/01\/10\/american-children-will-be-majority-minority-by-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"American Children Will be &#8220;Majority Minority&#8221; by 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The year during which the U.S. will become a &#8220;majority minority&#8221; is well discussed. \u00a0It looks like it&#8217;s going to happen <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/11\/14\/u-s-racialethnic-demographics-1960-today-and-2050\/\">sometime around 2050<\/a>\u00a0or earlier. This statistic, however, elides an interesting subplot: the year various age groups will be majority minority.<\/p>\n<p>Over at <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/editors\/2012\/12\/18\/whither-whiteness\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Society Pages Editors&#8217; Desk<\/a>, sociologist Doug Hartmann offered the following table. It shows that children under the age of 18 will be majority minority 32 years earlier, by 2018. \u00a0Young people ages 18-29 will join them by 2027. \u00a0By 2035, people aged 35-64 will be majority minority. \u00a0People 65 and older are quick to follow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/118.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53324\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/118.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"286\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This data reminds us that demographic change is gradual. \u00a0The year 2018 is just five years away. \u00a0If young people continue to vote in numbers similar to those in the last two elections, their changing demographics could push forward a change that looks all but inevitable in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, we need to be vigilant about how younger people are portrayed. \u00a0Today poverty is racialized so as to demonize social programs designed to help the less fortunate. \u00a0Can we imagine a future in which public education and other youth-oriented programming is similarly framed: as white people helping supposedly undeserving people of color? \u00a0This is likely something that we should be vigilant against in the coming years.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
