Nate Silver posted about <a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/12\/18\/in-gun-ownership-statistics-partisan-divide-is-sharp\/\" target=\"_blank\">characteristics associated with gun ownership<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, gun ownership is strongly correlated with political party, with Republicans much more likely to own guns than Democrats.\u00a0As Silver explains,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Whether someone owns a gun is a more powerful predictor of a person\u2019s political party than her gender, whether she identifies as gay or lesbian, whether she is Hispanic, whether she lives in the South or a number of other demographic characteristics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That gap between the political parties has grown significantly since he early 1990s, as fewer and fewer Democrat and Independent households own guns:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/18fivethirtyeight-guns2-blog480.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53109\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/18fivethirtyeight-guns2-blog480.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a gender gap in gun ownership, but according to exit polling of 2008 voters, it is largely due to Democrats; Republican women are only slightly less likely to own guns than Republican men:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/Screen-Shot-2012-12-19-at-7.08.25-AM.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53110\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/Screen-Shot-2012-12-19-at-7.08.25-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"447\" height=\"76\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gun ownership goes down as educational level increases:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/Screen-Shot-2012-12-19-at-7.10.54-AM.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53111\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/Screen-Shot-2012-12-19-at-7.10.54-AM-500x106.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"106\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/Screen-Shot-2012-12-19-at-7.10.54-AM-500x106.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/Screen-Shot-2012-12-19-at-7.10.54-AM.png 522w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Silver also presents differences by urban\/suburban\/rural location, income, military service, religious affiliation, and several other characteristics. These demographics matter, but the impact of political party remains clear, even accounting for other differences.<\/p>\n<p>And Silver argues the gap may grow. Younger Democrats are less likely to own guns than older Democrats, but there&#8217;s very little difference between Republicans of different age groups:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/Screen-Shot-2012-12-19-at-7.15.49-AM.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53112\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/Screen-Shot-2012-12-19-at-7.15.49-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"428\" height=\"105\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thus, as the two political parties consider their responses in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting, they face very different realities in terms of their members&#8217; gun ownership and likely personal stake in arguments about possible gun regulations.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em>Gwen Sharp is an associate professor of sociology at Nevada State College.
