{"id":53080,"date":"2013-01-14T13:00:06","date_gmt":"2013-01-14T18:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=53080"},"modified":"2013-01-18T15:22:39","modified_gmt":"2013-01-18T20:22:39","slug":"are-african-americans-changing-their-mind-about-gay-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/01\/14\/are-african-americans-changing-their-mind-about-gay-marriage\/","title":{"rendered":"Are African-Americans Changing Their Minds About Gay Marriage?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/lisa-wade\/are-african-americans-cha_b_2483936.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Huffington Post<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last month Jet &#8212; a magazine marketed to African-American population &#8212; featured their <a href=\"http:\/\/tv.msnbc.com\/2012\/12\/11\/first-male-lgbt-couple-appears-in-jet-magazine\/\" target=\"_blank\">first gay male couple<\/a> in their wedding announcements. \u00a0The announcement may be a sign that African-American attitudes towards gay marriage may be turning around. \u00a0While the group\u00a0has typically endorsed gay marriage at lower rates than White Americans, the gap between Blacks and Whites has been narrowing.<\/p>\n<p>The Pew Research Center <a href=\"http:\/\/www.people-press.org\/2012\/04\/25\/more-support-for-gun-rights-gay-marriage-than-in-2008-or-2004\/\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that the percent of Whites opposed to gay marriage dropped from 51% in 2008 to 41% in 2012. \u00a0Among Blacks, the percent in opposition dropped from 63% to 49%. \u00a0African-Americans and Whites are now separated by eight percentage points instead of twelve.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/110.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53081\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/110.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/110.jpg 421w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/110-110x90.jpg 110w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 421px) 100vw, 421px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The data above was collected in April of 2012. \u00a0In May, Obama announced that he supported gay marriage. \u00a0It <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/wonkblog\/post\/did-obama-change-the-nations-mind-on-gay-marriage\/2012\/05\/25\/gJQAmWrTqU_blog.html\" target=\"_blank\">remains to be seen<\/a> whether Obama&#8217;s modeling of a pro-gay stance will influence the opinions of the African-American community further.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
