{"id":53056,"date":"2012-12-17T11:45:41","date_gmt":"2012-12-17T16:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=53056"},"modified":"2012-12-15T20:44:12","modified_gmt":"2012-12-16T01:44:12","slug":"public-opinion-on-gun-control","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/12\/17\/public-opinion-on-gun-control\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Opinion on Gun Control"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ezra Klein at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/wonkblog\/wp\/2012\/12\/14\/nine-facts-about-guns-and-mass-shootings-in-the-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wonkblog<\/a> has put together an impressive collection of statistics on guns and mass shootings, including this data on public opinion on gun control.<\/p>\n<p>To begin, people seem generally less interested in owning guns. \u00a0The percent of households with guns has been steadily decreasing for decades:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/14.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53058\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/14-500x363.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/14-500x363.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/14.png 995w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But, perhaps counter-intuitively, support for gun control has waned:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/2.gif\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53059\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"327\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We might expect a tragedy like this week&#8217;s shooting to raise the overall level of support for gun control, but it probably won&#8217;t. \u00a0Previous shootings have not had much of an impact on opinion:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/41.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53057\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/41.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still, there is more support for some forms of gun control than others:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/33.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53060\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/33-500x369.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/33-500x369.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/33.jpg 635w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For what it&#8217;s worth, gun-related deaths are lower in states with stronger gun control. \u00a0Economist Richard Florida <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/national\/archive\/2011\/01\/the-geography-of-gun-deaths\/69354\/\">found<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;substantial negative correlations between firearm deaths and states that ban assault weapons (-.45), require trigger locks (-.42), and mandate safe storage requirements for guns (-.48)\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/51.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53061\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/51-500x386.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/51-500x386.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/51.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to know, however, whether this is correlation or causation. \u00a0Florida did not find correlations between gun deaths and other factors that we might expect to be correlated, including dense populations, high rates of stress, high numbers of immigrants, and mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>Klein thinks that now <em>is<\/em> the time to talk about the role of gun control in preventing tragedies like the one in Newtown. \u00a0He suggests we go ahead and politicize the shooting, since silencing a discussion is just another form of politicization. He writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If roads were collapsing all across the United States, killing dozens of drivers, we would surely see that as a moment to talk about what we could do to keep roads from collapsing. If terrorists were detonating bombs in port after port, you can be sure Congress would be working to upgrade the nation\u2019s security measures. If a plague was ripping through communities, public-health officials would be working feverishly to contain it.<\/p>\n<p>Only with gun violence do we respond to repeated tragedies by saying that mourning is acceptable but discussing how to prevent more tragedies is not. \u201cToo soon,\u201d howl supporters of loose gun laws. But as others have observed, talking about how to stop mass shootings in the aftermath of a string of mass shootings isn\u2019t \u201ctoo soon.\u201d It\u2019s much too late.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I agree that now is a good time to talk about gun control.
