{"id":52921,"date":"2012-12-13T13:00:27","date_gmt":"2012-12-13T18:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=52921"},"modified":"2012-12-13T18:05:18","modified_gmt":"2012-12-13T23:05:18","slug":"homelessness-and-the-neural-bases-for-dehumanization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/12\/13\/homelessness-and-the-neural-bases-for-dehumanization\/","title":{"rendered":"The Neural Bases for Dehumanizing the Homeless"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/lisa-wade\/the-neural-bases-for-dehu_b_2265490.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Huffington Post<\/a>.<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/24.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52929\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/24.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"359\" height=\"106\" \/><\/a>In most densely-packed urban cities, one will be able to observe a disturbing phenomenon: wealthy people marching past the homeless, day in and day out. \u00a0Often, the residents of the street and the residents of the apartments recognize each other and even know each other&#8217;s routines. \u00a0And, yet, familiarity doesn&#8217;t breed concern.<\/p>\n<p>Psychologists Lasana Harris and Susan Fiske were able to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17100784\" target=\"_blank\">detect<\/a>\u00a0a neurological process behind the ability to get used to seeing others suffer.\u00a0Using functional MRIs, they exposed individuals to images of the homeless. \u00a0These images tended to activate parts of the brain associated with disgust. \u00a0This, they argue, supports the idea that &#8220;extreme out-groups may be perceived as less than human&#8230;&#8221; \u00a0It is easy to overlook the suffering of the homeless, then, because we dehumanize them.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to disrupt this cognitive process, documentary film maker Goro Toshima has released a new film, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gorotoshima.com\/documentary-film\/broken-doors\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Broken Doors<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0The 36-minute documentary follows a young homeless couple in Los Angeles, Starr and Rico. \u00a0Not only does it put faces and names to an otherwise reviled and ignored population, the documentary shows viewers just how difficult it can be to survive on the streets and to get off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/17608755?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
