{"id":52599,"date":"2012-11-20T11:00:22","date_gmt":"2012-11-20T16:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=52599"},"modified":"2012-11-30T02:11:17","modified_gmt":"2012-11-30T07:11:17","slug":"the-gender-politics-of-the-dollhouse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/11\/20\/the-gender-politics-of-the-dollhouse\/","title":{"rendered":"The Gender Politics of the Dollhouse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/5962277\/the-gender-politics-of-the-dollhouse\" target=\"_blank\">Jezebel<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This holiday season, a dollhouse may be a feminist gift for a little girl.<\/p>\n<p>A tweet from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GenderPolitics\" target=\"_blank\">Natalie Novik<\/a>\u00a0inspired me to look into the toy. \u00a0She had discovered a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apartmenttherapy.com\/gender-neutral-dollhouses-180018\" target=\"_blank\">gender-neutral dollhouse<\/a> being sold at Etsy. \u00a0Following up on her lead, I went over the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toysrus.com\/family\/index.jsp?categoryId=3176576\" target=\"_blank\">Toys R Us<\/a> website to see what gender messages dollhouses were sending. \u00a0Some of the results surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>Among the 22 best selling dollhouses at Toys R Us, four came without people, six came with a\u00a0preponderance of females, ten came with a male, female, and children, and there were two I couldn&#8217;t categorize. \u00a0(All humans were white &#8212; some dollhouses included non-human creatures &#8212; and just about everyone appears to be wealthy.)<\/p>\n<p>The majority of dollhouses, then, came in two types. \u00a0The first was an explicitly family-themed toy. \u00a0The message of these was heteronormative, for sure, and also pro-coupling and pro-reproduction. \u00a0 The Fisher-Price Loving Family Home for the Holidays Dollhouse is an example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/118.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-52601\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/118.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"422\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second type of house, however, had themes of friendship and, dare I say, female-independence. \u00a0These houses had only women or, more often, a group of women and one man. \u00a0They gave the impression of female home-ownership and female-dominated social interaction. \u00a0The Exclusive Barbie Malibu Dreamhouse is an example:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/210.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52602\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"477\" height=\"495\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, most of the dollhouses that fell into this second type were Barbie affiliated. \u00a0People disagree as to whether Barbie is a good role model for young women. \u00a0She is roundly criticized for upholding a harmful standard of beauty, but she also tells women they can run for President and go to the moon. \u00a0In this case, Barbie is sending girls the message that they can have fulfilling lives and own homes without a husband.<\/p>\n<p>As if to capture the paradox completely, the dollhouse featured above comes complete with a Barbie in a bikini doing astronomy:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/35.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-52600\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/35.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/35.jpg 501w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/35-500x488.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Children, of course, play with toys both creatively and in resistance to the messages they send. \u00a0We&#8217;d be happy to hear your stories and observations in the comments.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
