{"id":52400,"date":"2012-11-12T10:51:12","date_gmt":"2012-11-12T15:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=52400"},"modified":"2012-11-12T15:01:22","modified_gmt":"2012-11-12T20:01:22","slug":"employees-suffer-a-steep-rise-in-underemployment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/11\/12\/employees-suffer-a-steep-rise-in-underemployment\/","title":{"rendered":"Employees Suffer a Steep Rise in Underemployment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While the news often discusses the proportion of the population that is unemployed, sociologists also talk about the working poor (people with full time jobs, but who are paid so little that they remain below the poverty line) and the <em>under<\/em>employed (e.g., people who have part-time jobs, but wish they were full-time).<\/p>\n<p>The<em> New York Times<\/em> recently put together a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2012\/10\/28\/business\/parttime.html?ref=business\" target=\"_blank\">graphic<\/a> illustrating the rise of underemployment due to the recession. Overall, the number of people who are working part-time involuntarily has risen. \u00a0In the related <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/10\/28\/business\/a-part-time-life-as-hours-shrink-and-shift-for-american-workers.html\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a>, reporter Steven Greenhouse quotes a retail consultant explaining:\u00a0\u201cOver the past two decades, many major retailers went from a quotient of 70 to 80 percent <em>full<\/em>-time to at least 70 percent <em>part<\/em>-time across the industry.\u201d \u00a0Underemployment has risen\u00a0in some economic sectors more than others, notably leisure\/hospitality and wholesale\/retail:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/17.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-52419\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"382\" height=\"407\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Among other employers, Greenhouse profiles a Fresh &amp; Easy store in San Diego. Employed there are 5 full-time managers and 17 part-time workers. \u00a0Shannon Hardin, who has worked there for five years, averages 28 hours a week and earns $10.90 an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Workers like Hardin often get very short shifts (designed to increase the number of employees in the store only during rush times), irregular schedules (making it difficult to arrange childcare), and last minute requests to work. \u00a0Being inflexible can get an employee fired.<\/p>\n<p>This is why employers like part-timers; from the company&#8217;s perspective, they&#8217;re cheap and flexible:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/23.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-52420\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/23.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"376\" height=\"423\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the employee&#8217;s perspective, of course, it means a meager existence, an uncertain future, and a life led at the whims of a company&#8217;s bottom line.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
