{"id":52361,"date":"2012-11-30T11:00:48","date_gmt":"2012-11-30T16:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=52361"},"modified":"2012-11-30T15:02:54","modified_gmt":"2012-11-30T20:02:54","slug":"this-month-in-sociological-images-november-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/11\/30\/this-month-in-sociological-images-november-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"This Month in Sociological Images (November 2012)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>SocImages News:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This month we had the fun of being quoted in news articles on getting girls to embrace science (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/content\/stereotypes-deter-women-from-becoming-scientists\/1548504.html\" target=\"_blank\">Voice of America<\/a><\/em>), Sweden&#8217;s gender-neutral toy catalog (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424127887324205404578147373422297406.html\" target=\"_blank\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em>),\u00a0hook up culture (yes, again) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.browndailyherald.com\/hookup-culture-not-as-prevalent-as-believed-study-shows-1.2795055#.ULWqk-Q72Ai\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Brown Daily Herald<\/em><\/a>), and dollhouses (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-2236340\/How-gender-neutral-dollhouses-finally-catching-mass-toy-retailers.html\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Mail<\/a><\/em>). \u00a0The latter involved us getting the word &#8220;heteronomativity&#8221; into the second sentence of a <em>Daily Mail<\/em> article!<\/li>\n<li>The Daily Mail coverage was prompted by our counterintuitive post suggesting that <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/11\/20\/the-gender-politics-of-the-dollhouse\/\" target=\"_blank\">the toy in question can be a feminist gift<\/a>, which also appeared at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/5962277\/the-gender-politics-of-the-dollhouse\" target=\"_blank\">Jezebel<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>BoingBoing featured Gwen&#8217;s post about <a href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/2012\/11\/28\/girls-crappy-fake-toy-laptop.html\" target=\"_blank\">different and unequal boy and girl toy laptops<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, we got a few nice link-tos. One from <em>The Atlantic<\/em> in a piece about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2012\/11\/why-people-dont-vote-in-1-graph\/264558\/\" target=\"_blank\">why people don&#8217;t vote<\/a>,\u00a0another from AdWeek about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/adfreak\/swedish-toys-r-us-catalog-tries-blur-gender-roles-145540\" target=\"_blank\">gendered toys<\/a>, and a third from\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em> in an article about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2012\/nov\/06\/no-doubt-native-american-stereotypes\" target=\"_blank\">Gwen Stefani wearing stereotypical &#8220;Indian&#8221; garb<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/38.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52770\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/11\/38.jpg\"
