{"id":52355,"date":"2012-10-31T14:37:13","date_gmt":"2012-10-31T19:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=52355"},"modified":"2012-10-31T14:38:30","modified_gmt":"2012-10-31T19:38:30","slug":"policeman-vs-police-girl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/10\/31\/policeman-vs-police-girl\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Policeman&#8221; vs. &#8220;Police Girl&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few years back I posted an photograph of two costumes side-by-side: labeled <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/10\/30\/beer-man-and-beer-girl\/\">&#8220;Beer <em>Man<\/em>&#8221; and &#8220;Beer <em>Girl<\/em>.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0 I wrote that the practice of using &#8220;man&#8221; alongside &#8220;girl&#8221; &#8220;reinforces a gender hierarchy by mapping it onto age.&#8221; \u00a0We see this outside of a Halloween context too, like in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/07\/girl-vs-man\/\" target=\"_self\">this vintage ad for pens<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sara P. found another example, this time from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iparty.com\/sites\/default\/files\/iParty_102412-103112.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">iparty<\/a>. \u00a0The flyer puts a girl and a boy side-by-side in police officer costumes. \u00a0The boy&#8217;s is labeled &#8220;policeman&#8221; and the girl&#8217;s is labeled &#8220;police girl.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/215.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52357\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/10\/215.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This phenomenon is an example of just how mundane and ubiquitous gender messages can be.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
