On Aging Prisoners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Today,&#8221; <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2012\/09\/massachusetts-elderly-prisoners-cost-compassionate-release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mother Jones<\/a><\/em>&#8216;s James Ridgeway reports, &#8220;roughly 1 in 12 state and federal prison inmates is 55 or older.&#8221; \u00a0Prisoners sentenced to life without parole will die in prison, so that means they&#8217;ll convalesce there too. \u00a0In other words, prisons are part nursing home and, according to a report from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aclu.org\/files\/assets\/elderlyprisonreport_20120613_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ACLU<\/a>, the number of elderly prisoners is expected to skyrocket:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/1.gif\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-51474\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/1-500x281.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/1-500x281.gif 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/1.gif 574w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nImprisonment is already expensive, but aging patients cost twice what a younger prisoner costs. \u00a0Today, we spent $16 billion a year to house elderly prisoners, \u00a0Soon we&#8217;ll have to start renovating our prisons.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Unless states start releasing them, [former warden Bob] Hood says, we will need to &#8220;retrofit every prison in America to put assisted living-units in it, wheelchair accessibility, handicapped toilets, grab bars &#8212; the whole nine yards.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Prisons increasingly feature assisted-living cells and hospice units.<\/p>\n<p>Some argue for &#8220;compassionate release.&#8221; \u00a0After all, elderly prisoners have\u00a0a very low recidivism rate. \u00a0But the ACLU cautions us to remember that release shouldn&#8217;t mean abdicating responsibility.\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;For many elderly prisoners,&#8221; the director of the ACLU&#8217;s National Prison Project explains, &#8220;particularly those with serious medical needs, simply pushing them out the prison door will be tantamount to a death sentence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
