{"id":51426,"date":"2012-10-31T15:00:05","date_gmt":"2012-10-31T20:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=51426"},"modified":"2012-10-31T16:36:30","modified_gmt":"2012-10-31T21:36:30","slug":"this-month-in-sociological-images-october-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/10\/31\/this-month-in-sociological-images-october-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"This Month in Sociological Images (October 2012)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>SocImages News:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a busy month at SocImages!<\/p>\n<p>Gwen&#8217;s photographs of a small town in her native Oklahoma were featured in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/heres-what-an-oil-boom-town-looks-like-once-its-gone-bust-2012-10\" target=\"_blank\">Business Insider photo-essay<\/a>\u00a0about the economic aftermath of an oil boom. \u00a0It&#8217;s pretty great!<\/p>\n<p>Some of our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/10\/30\/from-our-archives-halloween\/\" target=\"_blank\">Halloween archives<\/a> informed a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/10\/25\/sexy-halloween-costumes-for-girls_n_2011943.html\" target=\"_blank\">Huffington Post Parents<\/a>\u00a0slideshow about the changing nature of costumes: &#8220;from silly to sexy.&#8221; \u00a0They quote me using the word\u00a0\u201cextremification,\u201d so that was fun. \u00a0And I was pleased to be a part of a piece on race and Halloween costumes at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatodayeducate.com\/staging\/index.php\/ccp\/halloween-costumes-and-defining-the-line-between-playful-offensive\" target=\"_blank\">USA Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We put together a <a href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\/socimages\/halloween\/\" target=\"_blank\">Halloween-themed Pinterest page<\/a>, so you can peruse our entire collection of images and click through to our posts if you like. \u00a0Browser beware!<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I was part of a CNN radio story about the pressure young people are under to make themselves desirable college applicants:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cnnradio.cnn.com\/2012\/08\/16\/the-teenage-pressure-cooker\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Teenage Pressure Cooker<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/cnnradio.cnn.com\/2012\/08\/16\/the-teenage-pressure-cooker\/\" target=\"_blank\">listen<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>And I did a segment for the Los Angeles NBC affiliate about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/video\/#!\/on-air\/as-seen-on\/Expert--Too-Sexy-Costumes-Send-Kids-the-Wrong-Message\/176361891\" target=\"_blank\">sexy Halloween costumes<\/a>. \u00a0I don&#8217;t say much of note, but I did manage to say that Halloween was a &#8220;gender display ritual,&#8221; even for kids and that it a lot in common with a high school prom. \u00a0I also do an awkward stride through the Occidental College library. \u00a0Ah, local news. \u00a0:)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Upcoming Lectures and Appearances:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have three talks scheduled for Spring so far.
