{"id":51313,"date":"2012-09-27T11:00:48","date_gmt":"2012-09-27T16:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=51313"},"modified":"2013-02-11T03:29:16","modified_gmt":"2013-02-11T08:29:16","slug":"germany-attempts-to-recruit-men-into-child-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/09\/27\/germany-attempts-to-recruit-men-into-child-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany Attempts to Recruit Men into Child Care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Generally speaking, gender equality in the U.S. and other Western countries has involved women moving into men&#8217;s spheres. \u00a0We have not seen an equivalent migration of men into women&#8217;s spheres. \u00a0Accordingly, while women have integrated many male occupations (they are now, for example, 50% or more of law and medical students), many female-dominated ones remain heavily female.<\/p>\n<p>This is perhaps nowhere more true than in early childhood education. \u00a0In a story about male childcare workers at <a href=\"http:\/\/oowsection.org\/2012\/09\/22\/early-childhood-education-no-place-for-men\/\" target=\"_blank\">Organizations, Occupations and Work<\/a>, Lata Murti reports that only 5% of child care workers and 3% of pre-school teachers are male. \u00a0Numbers are also low in other Western countries. \u00a0In Germany, the average is 3.5% (and this includes <em>all<\/em> employees of child care centers, including custodians).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/132.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51317 aligncenter\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/132.jpg\" width=\"429\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So, <em>Spiegel Online<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/international\/germany\/germany-efforts-to-recruit-men-in-child-care-fall-short-a-854311.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a>, Germany has decided to try to do something about it. \u00a0Aiming to increase the percentage of men in child care to 20%, the government is spending 13 million Euros on a &#8220;More Men in Early Childhood Education and Care&#8221; program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The state isn&#8217;t doing this, though, solely out of a passion for gender equality or a\u00a0soft place in their heart for men holding babies. \u00a0They&#8217;re doing it because Germany has promised that there will be a spot in a day care center for all children when they turn one year old. \u00a0To fulfill this promise, they need more day care workers badly; recruiting men means that that other half of the population might fill out the profession.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
