They were too suggestive of women&#8217;s nipples (which are <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/12\/27\/what-makes-a-body-obscene\/\">obscene<\/a>, obviously) and possibly against the law.<\/p>\n<p>Nipple-phobia is back with a particularly amusing example from Facebook. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/5885714\/inside-facebooks-outsourced-anti+porn-and-gore-brigade-where-camel-toes-are-more-offensive-than-crushed-heads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Company policy<\/a> requires deleting images of &#8220;female nipple bulges&#8221; (defined as &#8220;naked &#8216;private parts'&#8221;; male nipples, with or without bulges, are excluded from the ban). \u00a0This prompted Facebook to take down a New Yorker cartoon by Mick Stevens, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/comic-riffs\/post\/new-yorker-cartoons-facebook-does-a-180-on-nipplegate\/2012\/09\/12\/5e1a37d4-fc8c-11e1-a31e-804fccb658f9_blog.html\">see if you can figure why<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Mankoff <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/cartoonists\/2012\/09\/nipplegate-why-the-new-yorker-cartoon-department-is-about-to-be-banned-from-facebook.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mocked the incident<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, and here I begin my own mockery, we are talking about Eve here. \u00a0And she <em>had<\/em> lost her innocence &#8212; and the innocence of the entire human race &#8212; with her &#8220;original&#8221; idea. \u00a0So&#8230; you know, she was a dirty, dirty gal who did a bad, bad thing and would realize the importance of covering up those &#8220;dirty pillows&#8221; sooner or later. \u00a0Facebook was just ahead of the curve.
