{"id":50994,"date":"2012-09-15T11:20:33","date_gmt":"2012-09-15T16:20:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=50994"},"modified":"2013-02-11T03:38:04","modified_gmt":"2013-02-11T08:38:04","slug":"religion-and-race-among-democrats-and-republicans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/09\/15\/religion-and-race-among-democrats-and-republicans\/","title":{"rendered":"Religion and Race among Democrats and Republicans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Peter N. sent in some data compiled by Chris Cillizza\u00a0of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/the-fix\/wp\/2012\/09\/10\/the-politics-of-race-and-religion-in-two-pie-charts\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0It reveals the intersection of race and religion among Democrats and Republicans. \u00a0 As Cillizza concludes, it&#8217;s &#8220;overblown&#8221; to say that the Republican party is made up of White Protestants and the Democratic of minorities and atheists, but there is definitely an argument to be made that each party is disproportionately so.<\/p>\n<p>This first pie chart shows the racial and religious affiliation of people\u00a0who identify with or lean towards the Republican party. \u00a0More than half are White Protestants, another 18% are White Catholics. \u00a0Only a small percentage of party faithfuls are religious Blacks and Hispanics (the two racial groups featured in in these data).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/1.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-50996\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/1.png\" width=\"548\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/1.png 609w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/1-500x350.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This second chart shows the same data for Democrats and Democratic-leaning individuals. \u00a0Almost a quarter of Democrats are White Protestants, but a slightly larger percentage of Democrats are religiously unaffiliated. \u00a0One in five Democrats identifies as either Black or Hispanic and religious. \u00a0The larger &#8220;other&#8221; category conceals smaller blocs that nonetheless add diversity to the party.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-50995\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/2.png\" width=\"549\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/2.png 610w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/2-500x347.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is just one way to slice the pie, so to speak, but these are the kinds of data that both the Obama and the Romney campaigns are working with. \u00a0When they aim to bring out their &#8220;base,&#8221; this is what they&#8217;re talking about. \u00a0These numbers may give us a clue as to why they pick the strategies they do, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/09\/13\/including-god-in-republican-democratic-platforms\/\">sudden spike in the inclusion of the word &#8220;God&#8221; in the Republican party platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
