{"id":50744,"date":"2012-09-02T11:21:45","date_gmt":"2012-09-02T16:21:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=50744"},"modified":"2017-09-17T16:00:53","modified_gmt":"2017-09-17T21:00:53","slug":"an-ounce-of-creativity-mustangs-ad-with-a-twist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/09\/02\/an-ounce-of-creativity-mustangs-ad-with-a-twist\/","title":{"rendered":"An Ounce of Creativity: Mustang&#8217;s Ad with a Twist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/11.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50749\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"559\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/11.jpg 559w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/09\/11-500x111.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" \/><\/a>Elisabeth R. sent in a commercial that, I admit, I kinda like. \u00a0 As the ad progresses, a Mustang driven through urban streets gets a new paint job as a diverse group of people project their personalities onto the car. \u00a0At the very end a little girl holding the hand of her father, wearing a pink ballerina get-up, spies the car. \u00a0The car turns pink and then goes black. \u00a0As it drives by her, she&#8217;s reflected in the mirror as a bad-ass black angel pictured above.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZcaREOUTLkk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>What I like about the commercial<em> isn&#8217;t<\/em> the fact that they portray the girl as resisting girliness. \u00a0Suggesting that girls who are less girly are better than those who aren&#8217;t is just another form of sexism, one that demeans femininity. \u00a0Likewise, the characters are diverse, but that&#8217;s par for the course these days,\u00a0especially\u00a0when an item is being marketed as urban and modern.<\/p>\n<p>What I like, instead, is just the fact that the ad has an ounce of creativity, that it ends with a twist. \u00a0Advertising is so stereotypical today and relies so strongly on tropes, that I find it exhausting to watch. \u00a0So, while the twist wasn&#8217;t totally subversive, I was relieved that the marketing team for Mustang did<em> something\u00a0<\/em>interesting. \u00a0Really, at this point my standards for not-horrible are pretty low.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
