{"id":50666,"date":"2012-12-27T13:03:44","date_gmt":"2012-12-27T18:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=50666"},"modified":"2017-09-17T16:20:55","modified_gmt":"2017-09-17T21:20:55","slug":"racialized-representations-of-evolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/12\/27\/racialized-representations-of-evolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Racialized Representations of Evolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>For the last week of December, we\u2019re re-posting some of our favorite posts from 2012.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Paul M. sent along the image below, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/health\/2012\/06\/02\/154166626\/the-paleo-diet-moves-from-the-gym-to-the-doctors-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an NPR story<\/a>, commenting on the way skin color is used in the portrayal of evolution. \u00a0There&#8217;s one obvious way to read this graphic: lighter-skinned people are more evolved (dare we say, &#8220;civilized&#8221;) than darker-skinned people.\u00a0It seemed worthy to make a point of Paul&#8217;s observation, because this racialized presentation of evolution is really common. \u00a0A search for the word on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=evolution&amp;hl=en&amp;prmd=imvnslb&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=1fs8UPDhLIfc2QXRj4DIDA&amp;ved=0CAsQ_AUoAQ&amp;biw=1600&amp;bih=787#q=evolution&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;tbm=isch&amp;prmd=imvnslb&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&amp;fp=f9dc2005c1c47f5a&amp;biw=1600&amp;bih=787\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Images<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/emikegarcia.blogspot.com\/2012\/01\/evolution.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quickly<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/the4faces.com\/2011\/09\/29\/stages-of-evolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turns<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-1070671\/Evolution-stops-Future-Man-look-says-scientist.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vizfact.com\/evolution-the-anti-science-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/The-Top-Ten-Daily-Consequences-of-Having-Evolved.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more<\/a>. \u00a0In fact, almost every single illustration of evolution of this type, unless it&#8217;s in black and white, follows this pattern. \u00a0(See also our post on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/08\/25\/guest-post-the-unbearable-whiteness-of-being-human\/\">representations of modern man<\/a>.) Here&#8217;s what a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=evolution+man&amp;rlz=1C1GGRV_enUS752US752&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwj-8vuokq3WAhVO9mMKHXSmAJoQ_AUICigB&amp;biw=1455&amp;bih=677\">Google image search<\/a> returns, for example:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-71624\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/3-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"749\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/3-1.png 1565w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/3-1-500x198.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/3-1-768x305.png 768w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/12\/3-1-1024x406.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 749px) 100vw, 749px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/2.jpeg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><br \/>\n<\/a>This is important stuff. \u00a0It reinforces the idea that darker-skinned people are more animalistic than the lighter-skinned. \u00a0It also normalizes light-skinned people as people and darker-skinned peoples as Black or Brown people, in the same way that we use the word &#8220;American&#8221; to mean White-American, but various hyphenated phrases (African-American, Asian-American, etc) to refer to everyone else. \u00a0So, though this may seem like a trivial matter, the patterns add up to a consistent centering and applauding of Whiteness.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
