{"id":50640,"date":"2012-08-27T12:35:24","date_gmt":"2012-08-27T17:35:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=50640"},"modified":"2012-08-27T12:36:09","modified_gmt":"2012-08-27T17:36:09","slug":"mapping-last-names-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/08\/27\/mapping-last-names-in-london\/","title":{"rendered":"Mapping Last Names in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year I posted about a map several geographers put together showing the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/02\/05\/maps-of-surnames\/\" target=\"_blank\">distribution of last names<\/a> across the U.S. Historical immigration and internal settlement patterns are reflected in the concentrations of names across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Now one of the geographers involved in that project, James Cheshire, has done the same for London. Using 2001 electoral rolls, Cheshire plotted the <a href=\"http:\/\/names.mappinglondon.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">15 most common surnames in 983 separate London districts<\/a>. Here&#8217;s a section of the map of the most common name:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/london-names1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-50644\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/london-names1-500x345.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/london-names1-500x345.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/london-names1.jpg 552w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The size of the font is scaled to represent the number of people with each name. They&#8217;re color-coded by place or origin (though since many immigrants have Anglicized names, origin of a name may not reflect a person&#8217;s ancestry).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spatialanalysis.co.uk\/2011\/01\/mapping-londons-surnames\/\" target=\"_blank\">As Cheshire points out<\/a>, a few names fill the top slot throughout most of London. As you go a bit further down the list, London&#8217;s diversity becomes more apparent.
