{"id":50626,"date":"2012-08-24T14:21:40","date_gmt":"2012-08-24T19:21:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=50626"},"modified":"2013-11-08T03:25:16","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T08:25:16","slug":"power-and-oprahs-hair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/08\/24\/power-and-oprahs-hair\/","title":{"rendered":"Power and Oprah&#8217;s Hair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The September issue of Oprah&#8217;s magazine, sent in by YetAnotherGirl, features the woman herself on the cover wearing her hair in a &#8220;natural&#8221; (that is, real and non-straightened). \u00a0The <em>O<\/em> website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oprah.com\/style\/Oprahs-Natural-Hair-on-O-Magazine-September-2012--Oprahs-Real-Hair\" target=\"_blank\">announces<\/a> that this is the first time in its 12-year history that Oprah has appeared on the cover without &#8220;blow-drying or straightening&#8221; her hair.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/11.jpeg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50627\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/11.jpeg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/11.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/11-500x281.jpeg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Black women&#8217;s hair is a touchy issue wrapped up deeply in racial power struggles. \u00a0The appearance of White people &#8212; in this case, the hair White people are more likely to have (that is, straight or slightly wavy) &#8212; is often considered the most beautiful or normal. \u00a0Black women who have tightly curled hair are faced with deciding to push back against white supremacy and wear their hair more-0r-less naturally (and face being seen as a &#8220;political&#8221; or &#8220;non-assimilating&#8221; Black person) or straighten their hair (and risk being accused of capitulating to racism). \u00a0Whatever they do, it&#8217;s sends a message.<\/p>\n<p>What I think is notable here is that Oprah, <em>of all people in the world<\/em>, has never until now appeared on the cover of <em>her own magazine<\/em> with &#8220;natural&#8221; hair. \u00a0 Lest we&#8217;ve forgotten who Oprah is, here&#8217;s a reminder (from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oprah_Winfrey#Rankings\" target=\"_blank\">wikipedia<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Winfrey was called &#8220;arguably the world&#8217;s most powerful woman&#8221; by\u00a0CNN\u00a0and Time.com,\u00a0&#8220;arguably the most influential woman in the world&#8221; by the\u00a0<em>American Spectator<\/em>,\u00a0&#8220;one of the 100 people who most influenced the 20th Century&#8221; and &#8220;one of the most influential people&#8221; from 2004 to 2011 by\u00a0<em>TIME<\/em>. Winfrey is the only person in the world to have appeared in the latter list on\u00a0all eight occasions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What I mean to say is, when even Oprah largely avoids being seen as she really is, we know we are seeing a powerful cultural force. \u00a0In this case, a racist and sexist one demanding that women of all races conform to an unreasonable White standard of beauty. \u00a0I&#8217;m glad that Oprah decided to appear this way for the cover, but I&#8217;m saddened by why it took this long.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/5931195\/oprahs-beautiful-natural-hair-makes-its-debut-on-o-magazine\" target=\"_blank\">Jezebel<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
