{"id":50592,"date":"2012-08-22T13:19:00","date_gmt":"2012-08-22T18:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=50592"},"modified":"2013-11-08T03:24:02","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T08:24:02","slug":"intra-state-variation-in-vulnerability-to-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/08\/22\/intra-state-variation-in-vulnerability-to-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Intra-State Variation in Vulnerability to Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scholars are busy attempting to predict the effects of climate change, including how it might harm people in some parts of the globe more than others. \u00a0A recent report by The Pacific Institute, sent in by\u00a0Aneesa D., does a more fine-grained analysis, showing which Californians will be the most harmed by climate change.<\/p>\n<p>They use <a href=\"http:\/\/pacinst.org\/reports\/climate_vulnerability_ca\/maps\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\">a variety of measures<\/a>\u00a0for each Census tract to make a Vulnerability Index, including natural factors (like tree cover), demographic factors (like age), and economic factors (like income). \u00a0At the <a href=\"http:\/\/pacinst.org\/reports\/climate_vulnerability_ca\/maps\/\" target=\"_blank\">interactive map<\/a>, you can see the details for each Census tract. \u00a0Their compiled index looks like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/120.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50602\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/120.jpg\" width=\"504\" height=\"568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/120.jpg 504w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/120-500x563.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can also see the Vulnerability Index for each measure individually. \u00a0Here is the data for the percent of <a href=\"http:\/\/pacinst.org\/reports\/climate_vulnerability_ca\/maps\/factors.html\" target=\"_blank\">people over age 65 who live alone<\/a>, a variable we know increases the risk of <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/Heat_Wave.html?id=KpRY0HNza4sC\" target=\"_blank\">death from heat wave<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/25.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50603\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/25.jpg\" width=\"478\" height=\"499\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s the data for the percent of workers who labor outside:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/35.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50601\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/08\/35.jpg\" width=\"477\" height=\"499\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s lots more data at the site, but what&#8217;s interesting here is that, even in incredibly wealthy parts of the world, climate change is going to have uneven effects. \u00a0When it does, the most vulnerable people in the more vulnerable parts of the state are going to migrate to the other parts. \u00a0Most Californians don&#8217;t imagine that their cities will be home to refugees, but this is exactly what will happen as parts of California become increasingly difficult to live in.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
