{"id":50208,"date":"2012-08-01T11:35:09","date_gmt":"2012-08-01T16:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=50208"},"modified":"2012-11-30T02:02:04","modified_gmt":"2012-11-30T07:02:04","slug":"declining-faith-in-hard-work-and-capitalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/08\/01\/declining-faith-in-hard-work-and-capitalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Declining Faith in Hard Work and Capitalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lclark.edu\/hart-landsberg\/2012\/07\/27\/declining-faith-in-hard-work-and-capitalism\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reports from the Economic Front<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Pew Research Center recently published a report titled \u201cPervasive Gloom About the World Economy.\u201d The following two charts come from Chapter 4 which is called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewglobal.org\/2012\/07\/12\/chapter-4-the-casualties-faith-in-hard-work-and-capitalism\/\">The Causalities: Faith in Hard Work and Capitalism<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first suggests that the belief that hard work pays off remains strong in only a few countries: Pakistan (81%), the U.S. (77%), Tunisia (73%), Brazil (69%), India (67%) and Mexico (65%). The low scores in China, Germany, and Japan are worth noting. This is not to say that people everywhere are not working hard, just that many no longer believe there is a strong connection between their effort and outcome.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/12.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50212\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/12.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"495\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second chart highlights the fact that growing numbers of people are losing faith in free market capitalism.\u00a0 Despite mainstream claims that \u201cthere is no alternative,\u201d a high percentage of people in many countries do not believe that the free market system makes people better off.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50210\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"510\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>GlobeScan\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.globescan.com\/84-press-releases-2012\/220-public-remains-concerned-over-wealth-inequalities-global-poll.html\">polled<\/a>\u00a0more than 12,000 adults across 23 countries about their attitudes towards economic inequality and, as the chart below reveals, the results were remarkably similar to those highlighted above.\u00a0 In fact, as GlobeScan noted, \u201cIn 12 countries over 50% of people said they did not believe that the rich deserved their wealth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/37.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50213\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/37.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"568\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It certainly seems that large numbers of people in many different countries are open to new ways of organizing economic activity.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\">Martin Hart-Landsberg is a professor of economics at <a href=\"http:\/\/college.lclark.edu\/faculty\/members\/martin_hart-landsberg\/\">Lewis and Clark College<\/a>.
