{"id":49652,"date":"2012-07-19T11:36:24","date_gmt":"2012-07-19T16:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=49652"},"modified":"2017-09-17T15:16:11","modified_gmt":"2017-09-17T20:16:11","slug":"49652","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/07\/19\/49652\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympic &#8220;Slums&#8221;: Housing for Migrant Workers in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many people around the world are eagerly awaiting the start of the Olympics next week. \u00a0A lucky few will compete and a small group of others will be there, in person, to watch. \u00a0Athletes and spectators, however, are just two of the groups that the games mobilize. \u00a0The <em>Daily Mail<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2174034\/London-2012-Olympics-10-room-1-shower-75-people-Inside-slum-camp-Olympic-cleaners.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> on the large numbers of people hired to be temporary janitors, groundskeepers, maids, and other types of cleaners. \u00a0Many of these workers are migrants who have come to London hoping to work for a few weeks and return to their families having earned a little more than they otherwise could.<\/p>\n<p>The story, sent in by Dolores R., focuses on the living conditions of these workers. \u00a0Most are paying rent to live in temporary trailers. \u00a0Packed together like sardines, the compound has been described as a &#8220;slum.&#8221; Pictures are available at the site.<\/p>\n<p>Complaints include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Crowded living spaces. \u00a0&#8220;Any accommodation where more than two adults have to share a room is considered \u2018overcrowded\u2019 under housing laws.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Insufficient toilet and shower facilities that were &#8220;filthy&#8221; from overuse.<\/li>\n<li>Leaking trailers that the workers are told to live with or fix themselves;\u00a0stagnant ground water around some of the trailers has forced them to put together make-shift stepping stones.<\/li>\n<li>Women are being placed in trailers with men they don&#8217;t know; at least two women have quit when they were told they had to stay with male strangers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Daily Mail says that the employees have signed gag orders that prevent them from talking to the press and that family and friends are barred from the camp for &#8220;security reasons.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/thesociologist.tumblr.com\/post\/27393419063\/so-it-seems-that-exploitation-is-the-true-spirit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Sociologist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
