Unstraightened African American hair is also used as an exotic marker, presented as <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/08\/24\/niveas-re-civilize-yourself-ad\/\" target=\"_blank\">less civilized<\/a>. Recently readers sent in two separate examples of these tropes.<\/p>\n<p>Michelle H. noticed that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lanebryant.com\/content.jsp?pageName=lboemail20120503&amp;mcid=email&amp;sid=EMOU050312ActNewxL01\" target=\"_blank\">Lane Bryant<\/a> advertised &#8220;exotic inspirations&#8221; as part of a &#8220;tribal trend&#8221; &#8220;inspired by nature&#8221; that allows you to use your &#8220;natural instincts&#8221;. The model used to personify this exoticism is an African American woman with unstraightened hair:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/lane-bryant1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-49629\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/lane-bryant1-500x598.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/lane-bryant1-500x598.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/lane-bryant1.jpg 589w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Sonia A., Jen J., and an anonymous reader noticed that data analysis firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasti.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">ATLAS.ti<\/a> used an image of an African American woman with several pencils stuck in her natural curls along with text encouraging you to &#8220;tame your data&#8221; but also &#8220;go wild&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/atlas.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-49631\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/atlas-500x245.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/atlas-500x245.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/atlas.jpg 972w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The company removed the banner from its Facebook page after complaints, but it&#8217;s still on the company website in an image and accompanying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasti.com\/fileadmin\/atlasti\/downloads\/atlas.ti6_brochure_2009_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">brochure<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasti.com\/product.html\" target=\"_blank\">product<\/a> info page and several other places on the site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve posted in the past about the ways in which ads often depicted non-White women as wild and exotic (and thus exciting), even conflating them with animals through poses or animal-print clothing.
