{"id":49149,"date":"2012-07-04T11:20:42","date_gmt":"2012-07-04T16:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=49149"},"modified":"2015-09-19T22:57:45","modified_gmt":"2015-09-20T03:57:45","slug":"selling-fireworks-in-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/07\/04\/selling-fireworks-in-america\/","title":{"rendered":"Selling Fireworks in America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During college I spent a season selling fireworks at a roadside stand in South Dakota. \u00a0As you can see on the map below, posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/scott\/state-fireworks-map\" target=\"_blank\">Buzzfeed<\/a>, South Dakota is one of the few states where you can buy serious fireworks. \u00a0We sold some pretty hard-core stuff, but I mostly liked working there because the packages were so pretty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/17.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-49151\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/17-500x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/17-500x571.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/17.jpg 578w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In any case, if you haven&#8217;t lived in any of the dark blue states, you may not have seen the roadside stands that pop up this time of year. \u00a0Some are elaborate seasonal operations, but others are rather ramshackle. \u00a0Fireworks for sale end up getting crammed into all manner of places. \u00a0Lucky for us, in 2010 <a href=\"http:\/\/billvaccaro.visualserver.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">photographer\u00a0Bill Vaccaro<\/a> drove across the country snapping shots of these retailers.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
