Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/msmagazine.com\/blog\/blog\/2012\/07\/03\/sexual-objectification-part-1-what-is-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ms.<\/a>, \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/broadblogs.com\/2012\/11\/26\/sexual-objectification-what-is-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">BroadBlogs<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/carolineheldman.wordpress.com\/2012\/07\/02\/sexual-objectification-part-1-what-is-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">Caroline Heldman&#8217;s Blog<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Around since the 1970s and associated with curmudgeonly second-wave feminists, the phrase &#8220;sexual objectification&#8221; can inspire eye-rolling. The phenomenon, however, is more rampant than ever in popular culture. \u00a0Today\u00a0women\u2019s sexual objectification is celebrated as a form of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/00497870802634812\" target=\"_blank\">female empowerment<\/a>.\u00a0 This has enabled a new\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ingentaconnect.com\/content\/klu\/sers\/2011\/00000065\/F0020003\/00009984\" target=\"_blank\">era of sexual objectification<\/a>,\u00a0characterized by greater\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/davidshenk.com\/webimages\/LifeAtHyperspeedNYT97.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">exposure to advertising<\/a>\u00a0in general, and increased sexual explicitness in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/virtualworker.pbworks.com\/f\/Advertising%20gender%20roles.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">advertising<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/k722255851qh46u8\/\" target=\"_blank\">magazines<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/swantondissertationresearch.blogspot.com\/2011\/10\/sexual-objectification-of-women-in.html\" target=\"_blank\">television shows<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/teenmedia.unc.edu\/pdf\/Mass.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">movies<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mendeley.com\/research\/the-effects-of-the-sexualization-of-female-video-game-characters-on-gender-stereotyping-and-female-selfconcept\/\" target=\"_blank\">video games<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/6g02v472430w1375\/\" target=\"_blank\">music videos<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1300\/J057v13n01_03\" target=\"_blank\">television news<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reclaimthemedia.org\/media_justice\/jennifer_pozner_reality_tv_rea2142\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;reality&#8221; television<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What is sexual objectification? \u00a0If objectification is the process of representing or treating a person like an object (a non-thinking thing that can be used however one likes), then sexual objectification is the process of representing or treating a person like a sex object, one that serves another\u2019s sexual pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>How do we know sexual objectification when we see it? \u00a0Building on the work of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1088-4963.1995.tb00032.x\/full\">Nussbaum<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/homepages.ed.ac.uk\/rhl\/objectification\/nuss.pdf\">Langton<\/a>, I&#8217;ve devised the Sex Object Test (SOT) to measure the presence of sexual objectification in images.\u00a0 I\u00a0proprose that sexual objectification is present if the answer to any of the following seven questions is &#8220;yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Does the image show only part(s) of a sexualized person\u2019s body?<\/strong><br \/>\nHeadless women, for example, make it easy to see her as only a body by erasing the individuality communicated through faces, eyes, and eye contact:<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/214.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48974\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"304\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWe get the same effect when we show <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/11\/18\/chapstick-gets-cheeky\/\">women from behind<\/a>, with\u00a0an added layer of sexual violability. American Apparel seems to be a particular fan of this approach:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/131.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-48975\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/131.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Does the image present a sexualized person as a stand-in for an object?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The breasts of the woman in <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/08\/28\/booze-sex\/\">this beer ad<\/a>, for example, are conflated with the cans:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/cans.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-48985\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/cans-500x644.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/cans-500x644.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/cans-793x1024.jpg 793w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/cans.jpg 835w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Likewise, the woman in this <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/06\/women-as-items-for-conspicuous-consumption\/\">fashion spread in\u00a0<em>Details<\/em><\/a> in which a woman becomes a table upon which\u00a0things are perched. She is reduced to an inanimate object, a useful tool for the assumed heterosexual male viewer:<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/124.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48988\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/124.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"359\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOr sometimes objects themselves are made to look like women, like this series of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/03\/18\/more-urinals\/\">sinks and urinals shaped like women&#8217;s bodies and mouths<\/a>\u00a0and these <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/11\/29\/just-in-time-for-the-holidays\/\">everyday items, like pencil sharpeners<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Does the image show a sexualized person as interchangeable?<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/carolineheldman.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/interchangeable.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><br \/>\n<\/a>Interchangeability is a common advertising theme that reinforces the idea that women, like objects, are fungible. And like objects, \u201cmore is better,\u201d a market sentiment that erases the worth of individual women. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/17\/more-cars-and-sex\/\">image below<\/a>\u00a0advertising Mercedes-Benz presents just part of a woman&#8217;s body (breasts) as interchangeable and additive:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/216.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-48989\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"424\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This image of a set of Victoria&#8217;s Secret models, borrowed from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/10\/28\/line-em-up-a-visual-trope\/\">a previous SocImages post<\/a>, has a similar effect. Their hair and skin color varies slightly, but they are also presented as all of a kind:<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/111.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-49218\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/111-500x238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/111-500x238.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/111.jpg 590w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Does the image affirm the idea of violating the bodily integrity of a sexualized person that can&#8217;t consent?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0ad, for example, shows an <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/12\/13\/opps-i-appear-to-have-strangled-a-woman-with-my-tie\/\">incapacitated woman in a sexualized position<\/a>with a male protagonist\u00a0holding her on a leash. It glamorizes the possibility that he has attacked and subdued her:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/38.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-7\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-48990\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/38.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>5)\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Does the image suggest that sexual availability is\u00a0the defining characteristic of the person?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This ad, with the copy &#8220;now open,&#8221; sends the message that this woman is\u00a0<em>for sex<\/em>. \u00a0If she is open for business, then she presumably can be had by anyone.<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/511.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-8\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48981\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/511.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>6) Does the image show a sexualized person as a commodity (something that can be bought and sold)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By definition, objects can be bought and sold, but some images portray women as everyday commodities. \u00a0Conflating <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/25\/sexualizing-and-gendering-food\/\">women with food<\/a>\u00a0is a common sub-category. \u00a0As an example, Meredith Bean, Ph.D., sent in this photo of a Massive Melons &#8220;energy&#8221; drink sold in New Zealand:<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-9\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49016\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/07\/1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/12\/26\/redtape-shoes-live-your-fantasy-campaign\/\">ad below for Red Tape shoes<\/a>, women are literally for sale:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/63.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-10\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-48983\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/63-500x416.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/63-500x416.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/63-110x90.png 110w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/63.png 545w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>7) Does the image\u00a0treat a sexualized person&#8217;s body as a canvas?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the two images below, women&#8217;s bodies are presented as a particular type of object: a canvas that is marked up or drawn upon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/72.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-11\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48970\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/72.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.generationnext.com.au\/2012\/04\/women-objectify-women-in-music-videos-too\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-48972\" title=\"73\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/06\/73.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>The damage caused by widespread female objectification in popular culture is not just theoretical.\u00a0 We now have over ten years of research showing that living in an objectifying\u00a0society is highly toxic\u00a0for girls and women, as\u00a0is described in <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/07\/06\/sexual-objectification-part-2-the-harm\/\" target=\"_blank\">Part 2 of this series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\">Caroline Heldman is a professor of politics at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxy.edu\/faculty\/caroline-heldman\">Occidental College<\/a>.
