{"id":48046,"date":"2012-06-16T11:30:56","date_gmt":"2012-06-16T16:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=48046"},"modified":"2015-09-19T23:01:17","modified_gmt":"2015-09-20T04:01:17","slug":"humanizing-the-homeless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/06\/16\/humanizing-the-homeless\/","title":{"rendered":"Humanizing the Homeless"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unless we&#8217;re one of them, many of us learn the habit of looking away from the down-and-out when we&#8217;re going about our daily lives. \u00a0Truly <em>seeing<\/em> the homeless, the mentally ill, the drug-addicted, and others in crisis (not overlapping populations, but intersecting ones) potentially forces us to think about our role in a society that has largely abandoned them.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, art photography of these populations tends to force us to look, to see just how much pain and suffering there is to see on the streets.<\/p>\n<p>In light of this &#8212; not looking vs. looking to see the pain &#8212; I found the photography of Chris Arnade to be a breath of fresh air. \u00a0Featured at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/photoessays\/2012\/03\/portraits-addiction-bronx\/vanessa-arnade\" target=\"_blank\">Mother Jones<\/a>, his portraits of &#8220;drug abuse, sex work, and homelessness in the Bronx&#8221; are humanizing. Many of them show smiling faces, dignity, pride, and peace. I recommend going to see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/arnade\/sets\/72157627894114489\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flickr set<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
