{"id":47589,"date":"2012-08-09T11:23:22","date_gmt":"2012-08-09T16:23:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=47589"},"modified":"2013-11-08T03:29:31","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T08:29:31","slug":"human-brain-synchronicity-the-body-as-a-dependent-variable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/08\/09\/human-brain-synchronicity-the-body-as-a-dependent-variable\/","title":{"rendered":"Human Brain Synchronicity: The Body as Dependent Variable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The mass media often enjoys stoking the fires of the &#8220;nature\/nurture debate,&#8221; an argument between those who believe that human behavior is largely inborn (nature) and those who believe it is largely learned (nurture). \u00a0In fact, most scholars reject this forced choice\u00a0in favor of the idea that nature and nurture are forces that shape each other.<\/p>\n<p>In this view, biology is both an independent and a dependent variable. \u00a0That is, it acts on us in ways that shape our interactions with others (such that behavior is dependent on biology) and our interactions with others shape our biology (such that our biology is dependent on our behavior). \u00a0I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/lisawadedotcom.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/02\/freese-li-wade-2003-the-potential-relevances-of-biology-to-social-inquiry1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">published professionally on this topic<\/a> and we&#8217;ve previously posted examples involving the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/08\/03\/transcending-the-naturenurture-debate-fallons-brain\/\">socio-genetic causation of psychopathy<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/10\/27\/social-influences-on-biology\/\" target=\"_self\">the response of testosterone levels to political victories<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/09\/19\/changing-biology-age-at-first-menstruation\/\" target=\"_self\">the historical shift in the average age of menstruation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s example comes from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencespacerobots.com\/blog\/52420122\" target=\"_blank\">an fMRI study of emotion<\/a>. \u00a0They discovered that, when we watch others experience emotions, our brains sync up with theirs. \u00a0Our bodies, in other words, strongly react to environmental stimuli. \u00a0This, argues one of the researchers, &#8220;&#8230;facilitates understanding others&#8217; intentions and actions&#8230; [as well as] social interaction and group processes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/05\/1.jpg.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-47591\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/05\/1.jpg-500x306.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/05\/1.jpg-500x306.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/05\/1.jpg.png 592w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It may seem obvious that our neural activity would respond to our environments, but I think it bears emphasizing. \u00a0It is too easy for us, in a society that seems eager for a biological explanation for everything, to ignore the ways in which the body is a dependent variable as well as an independent one. \u00a0In many ways it makes sense to think of our biologies as the matter through which social interaction occurs. \u00a0In other words, while we often think of society as the medium for the transmission of genes, I also like to think of biology as the medium for the transmission of society.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
