I use it when discussing the de-politicization of social issues, and the commodification of freedom&#8211;it&#8217;s just something you buy. I also use this one from Lisa:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/blogger2wp\/32Picture.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171897946751719490\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/blogger2wp\/65432Picture.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Jeep Liberty&#8211;notice on the right it says &#8220;Glass Ceiling&#8221; and has an arrow pointing down below; so structural inequality at work is trivialized, and again, &#8220;liberty&#8221; is something we can purchase.<\/p>\n<p>These ads go nicely along with the old <a href=\"http:\/\/sociologicalimages.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/virginia-slims-ads-commodifying-freedom.html\">Virginia Slims campaign<\/a>, these <a href=\"http:\/\/sociologicalimages.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/trivializing-womens-power.html\">other &#8220;liberated women&#8221; themed ads<\/a> Lisa posted previously, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/sociologicalimages.blogspot.com\/2007\/09\/commodification-of-womens-independence.html\">&#8220;right hand ring&#8221; ad <\/a>I posted.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em>Gwen Sharp is an associate professor of sociology at Nevada State College.
