{"id":47083,"date":"2012-06-02T11:30:31","date_gmt":"2012-06-02T16:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=47083"},"modified":"2013-11-08T04:26:04","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T09:26:04","slug":"gender-and-changes-in-the-u-s-occupational-profile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/06\/02\/gender-and-changes-in-the-u-s-occupational-profile\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender and Changes in the U.S. Occupational Profile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NPR&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/money\/2012\/05\/03\/151282913\/what-america-s-women-do-for-work?sc=fb&amp;cc=fp\" target=\"_blank\">Planet Money<\/a> asks an interesting question. \u00a0If there are more women in the workforce now than there were forty years ago (and there are), where did all the additional jobs come from?<\/p>\n<p>The pie charts below tell some of the story. \u00a0On the left are charts representing the percentage of women in various occupations in 1972. \u00a0The size of the circle corresponds to the size of the sector: larger is equivalent to more total jobs; on the right are the same charts for 2012.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/05\/112.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47087\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/05\/112.jpg\" width=\"478\" height=\"673\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice two trends: first, \u00a0in almost all categories today\u00a0women are a larger percentage of the workers than they were in 1972 and, second, many of the occupational sectors that have high percentages of women have grown (e.g., education and health), whereas many in which men dominate have shrunk (e.g., manufacturing, media\/telecommunications).<\/p>\n<p>So, as women have joined the workforce, they&#8217;ve contributed to the overall growth of the American workforce and, specifically, filled the demand for employees in growing occupations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/05\/24.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47088\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/05\/24.jpg\" width=\"471\" height=\"362\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
