{"id":47006,"date":"2012-06-13T11:40:25","date_gmt":"2012-06-13T16:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=47006"},"modified":"2013-11-08T04:16:07","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T09:16:07","slug":"the-exploitation-of-u-s-worker-productivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/06\/13\/the-exploitation-of-u-s-worker-productivity\/","title":{"rendered":"The Exploitation of U.S. Worker Productivity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In capitalism, owners of the &#8220;means of production&#8221; (things like land, factories, technologies, and natural resources, or the money to buy these things) employ labor to do the work of actually producing things. \u00a0If the system is working correctly, the value of the labor that goes into making something is worth less than the value of the thing. \u00a0This way the capitalist can sell the thing, pay the worker, and skim some profit off the top.<\/p>\n<p>But how much profit? \u00a0In a less exploitative system, the worker is paid close to what his work is worth (after\u00a0accounting\u00a0for the expenses of maintaining the means of production). In a more exploitative system, the capitalist takes a larger chunk of the enhanced value for himself and gives less to the worker.<\/p>\n<p>What kind of system do we have in the U.S.? \u00a0Let&#8217;s take a look at some data.<\/p>\n<p>Over at <a href=\"http:\/\/media.lclark.edu\/content\/hart-landsberg\/2012\/04\/29\/confronting-savage-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reports from the Economic Front<\/a>, Martin Hart-Landsberg posted this graph. It shows that \u00a0workers have become increasingly productive\u00a0since 1948 (i.e., they have created more and more surplus value). \u00a0Employers largely shared the increase in profitability with their workers&#8230; until the mid-1970s. \u00a0Since then, wages have remained stagnant even as worker productivity has continued to rise. \u00a0&#8220;In other words,&#8221; Hart-Landsberg writes, &#8220;the owners of the means of production have basically stopped sharing gains in output with their workers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/05\/15.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47010\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/05\/15.jpg\" width=\"532\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/05\/15.jpg 532w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/05\/15-500x390.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 532px) 100vw, 532px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You wonder why the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/09\/17\/troubling-trends-income-inequality-and-poverty\/\">middle class is shrinking<\/a>? \u00a0This is one reason.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
