{"id":4661,"date":"2008-11-29T02:00:03","date_gmt":"2008-11-29T07:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=4661"},"modified":"2017-09-16T16:22:37","modified_gmt":"2017-09-16T21:22:37","slug":"an-entitlement-to-the-right-to-define-and-consume-female-beauty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/11\/29\/an-entitlement-to-the-right-to-define-and-consume-female-beauty\/","title":{"rendered":"An Entitlement to the Right to Define and Consume Female Beauty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Breck C. encouraged us to post about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.etoday.ru\/2008\/11\/female-bodybuilders-martin-schoeller.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photographs of body building women<\/a>\u00a0from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0976195534\/boingboing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new book<\/a>.\u00a0 When <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feministe.us\/blog\/archives\/2008\/11\/24\/beauty-and-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feministe<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2008\/11\/14\/photo-gallery-of-fem.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boing Boing<\/a> posted about them it, predictably,\u00a0prompted a rash of comments to the effect of &#8220;those women are gross\/disgusting\/unattractive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I think Roy at <a href=\"http:\/\/nocookiesforme.blogspot.com\/2008\/11\/its-good-to-know-that-women-at-either.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No Cookies For Me<\/a> says it best:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It doesn&#8217;t matter if you find those women attractive or not. They&#8217;re very likely <em>not doing it for you<\/em>. That you find body building &#8220;grotesque&#8221; is completely beside, behind, or even miles away from the point. Nobody gives a shit that you find it disgusting. If you find it disgusting? Don&#8217;t do it. [And n]obody is trying to make you become or date a body builder&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nicely put.\u00a0 This reflexive judging of women&#8217;s attractiveness reveals the entitlement that many feel to be aesthetically pleased by women&#8217;s appearance and, thus, the expectation that women <em>owe it to the world<\/em> to be attractive (as the world defines it, of course).\u00a0\u00a0It also demonstrates\u00a0the related idea that women are, first and foremost and no matter what else they do, sexual objects.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
