{"id":46253,"date":"2012-05-09T11:24:58","date_gmt":"2012-05-09T16:24:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=46253"},"modified":"2013-11-08T04:32:36","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T09:32:36","slug":"its-good-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/05\/09\/its-good-to\/","title":{"rendered":"Class Aspirations and the Invisible Hierarchy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while back, in a post of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/08\/03\/test-prep-for-kindergarten-kids-and-class-privilege-in-nyc\/\">test prep for kindergarten entrance exams<\/a>, I criticized the idea that we should be giving our children every advantage. \u00a0Have every advantage over who? \u00a0Somehow, I wrote, &#8220;the fact that advantaging your child disadvantages other people\u2019s children gets lost.\u00a0 If it advantages your child, it must be advantaging him over someone else; otherwise it\u2019s not an advantage, you see?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This notion applies, also, to our adult lives, as manifest in a post about <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/12\/26\/luxury-and-the-consumption-of-labor\/\">the &#8220;luxury&#8221; of drinking tea that was especially time-consuming to prepare<\/a>. \u00a0We&#8217;re supposed to find appealing the idea that someone else has had to work really hard for our pleasure and comfort. \u00a0Really?<\/p>\n<p>I thought of both of these examples when I saw this Citigold ad, submitted by\u00a0vmlojw. \u00a0The copy reads, &#8220;You may not consider yourself privileged. \u00a0Then again, you haven&#8217;t experienced our premium service yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/110.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-46254\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/110-500x668.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/110-500x668.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/110-765x1024.jpg 765w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/110.jpg 1157w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What is interesting to me about this is the assumption that we should all seek to have MORE than other people. \u00a0The ad doesn&#8217;t suggest that we should seek to be comfortable or have enough to get by, but instead appeals to the idea that we must all want a &#8220;premium&#8221; life, one that is characterized by having <em>more than<\/em> other people.<\/p>\n<p>And this isn&#8217;t interpreted to mean that you&#8217;re greedy or arrogant. \u00a0It doesn&#8217;t reflect on your character negatively. \u00a0Instead, being on the top of a hierarchy is something to aspire to. \u00a0 The fact that that your being on top requires other people to be on the bottom is of no concern. \u00a0The pleasures and comforts of being on the top are things that we should <em>enjoy without qualms<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0the existence of\u00a0hierarchy\u00a0itself &#8212; the idea that we must live in a world where some people have so much and others have so little &#8212; is never questioned. \u00a0I think there&#8217;s a nearly-invisible American value here that I would like us to talk more about.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
