{"id":46208,"date":"2012-04-18T09:54:40","date_gmt":"2012-04-18T14:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=46208"},"modified":"2012-04-18T09:54:40","modified_gmt":"2012-04-18T14:54:40","slug":"producing-bodies-in-anti-smoking-campaigns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/04\/18\/producing-bodies-in-anti-smoking-campaigns\/","title":{"rendered":"Producing Bodies in Anti-Smoking Campaigns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/Screen-shot-2012-04-18-at-7.43.08-AM.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-46209\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/Screen-shot-2012-04-18-at-7.43.08-AM-500x186.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/Screen-shot-2012-04-18-at-7.43.08-AM-500x186.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2012\/04\/Screen-shot-2012-04-18-at-7.43.08-AM.png 519w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last month the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/campaign\/tips\/resources\/about\/campaign-overview.html\" target=\"_blank\">graphic anti-smoking ads<\/a> intended to \u201craise awareness of the human suffering caused by smoking and to encourage smokers to quit.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 The campaign, titled \u201cTips From Former Smokers,\u201d depicts individuals who have experienced some of the potential effects of tobacco use, including stomas, stroke, lung removal, heart attack, limb amputations, and asthma.\u00a0 For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=GEWky9PEroU\" target=\"_blank\">this ad<\/a> features several former smokers who offer \u201ctips\u201d on how to live with a throat stoma (hole), such as \u201cCrouch, don\u2019t bend over\u2014you don\u2019t want to lose the food in your stomach\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GEWky9PEroU\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"500\" height=\"314\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/5zWB4dLYChM\" data-rel=\"lightbox-video-0\" target=\"_blank\">This ad<\/a> shows Terrie, a throat cancer survivor, completing the morning routine she performs in order to maintain her appearance after losing her hair and teeth and having a tracheotomy:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5zWB4dLYChM\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"500\" height=\"314\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/-WrWwUsKKN8\" data-rel=\"lightbox-video-1\" target=\"_blank\">this ad<\/a> depicts several people who suffered a vascular disease brought on by smoking who had to have limbs amputated:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"314\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-WrWwUsKKN8\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the whether these ads will be effective in persuading smokers to quit, we might ask whether fear and stigma are appropriate health promotion strategies. \u00a0Is it possible or ethical to scare people into changing their behaviors?\u00a0 What are the implications of using stigmatized people to serve as a warning label to others?<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s most striking about these ads is how they use and portray the human body.\u00a0 Medical sociologist <a href=\"http:\/\/usyd.academia.edu\/DeborahLupton\/About\" target=\"_blank\">Deborah Lupton<\/a>\u00a0suggests that health promotion campaigns such as this one do not simply depict bodies but also <em>produce <\/em>them; that is, the ways we talk about and create images of certain bodies says something about who or what that body is and what it does. She argues that when the body is seen as uncontrolled, say, with holes or missing limbs, then the self is understood as undisciplined.\u00a0 For these former smokers, their undisciplined selves resulted in their uncontrolled bodies.
