{"id":45921,"date":"2012-05-12T11:30:36","date_gmt":"2012-05-12T16:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=45921"},"modified":"2017-09-17T15:01:37","modified_gmt":"2017-09-17T20:01:37","slug":"equal-opportunity-for-idealized-employees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/05\/12\/equal-opportunity-for-idealized-employees\/","title":{"rendered":"Equal Opportunity for Idealized Employees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sociologists have observed that employment in the U.S. is largely structured around an assumption that the worker has no family responsibilities. \u00a0The ideas that an employee should be able to work during non-school hours, stay late when needed, take off time for their own illness but never anyone else&#8217;s, for example, all presume that the workers have either no children or someone else taking care of children for them.<\/p>\n<p>Most jobs, then, are not designed to be compatible with family responsibilities. \u00a0Since most people doing primary child care are women, this hurts mothers disproportionately. \u00a0Mothers have a more difficult time being the &#8220;perfect employee&#8221; and also face <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/04\/12\/the-motherhood-penalty\/\">discrimination from employers<\/a>. \u00a0This translates into some telling numbers. \u00a0Women make about 69% of what men make (not controlling for type of occupation), but most of this disadvantage is related to parental status, not sex. Women without children make 90% of what men make, while mothers make 66%. \u00a0Ann Crittenden&#8217;s book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/thepriceofmotherhood\/AnnCrittenden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Price of Motherhood<\/a><\/em>, lays out these numbers starkly.<\/p>\n<p>These issues are at the heart of this well-crafted <a href=\"http:\/\/leftycartoons.com\/really-good-careers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ampersand cartoon by B.
